I have the tune in radio app and am listening on there. It's free.

Majid is talking about how the definition of hate speech is applied and how hate crimes have shot up, and how it makes you wonder if there truly is a rise in hate crime when it's being based on this kind of definition. I'm so glad he's saying this. "You have the right to offend people, and that's very different to targeted hate."

BlueHarry · 15/02/2020 13:21

I wish James O'B would have a proper discussion of this instead of dismissing everyone with concerns as being reactionary bigots who are outraged by "gender neutral sausage rolls". (I listen to LBC most days).

nauticant · 15/02/2020 13:21

You can listen now, it's in full flow.

BlueHarry · 15/02/2020 13:24

This is looking to be a great discussion. Thank you op.

KenDodd · 15/02/2020 13:26

Thanks, I'll listen later when it's done and start from the beginning.

nauticant · 15/02/2020 13:27

If I listen to James O'Brien and he causes me annoyance, how can I get the Police to act on my behalf under section 127(2) of the Communications Act 2003?

Getting him in front of a court would remove my annoyance and tickle me hugely.

TheRealMcKenna · 15/02/2020 13:31

Maajid knows all about being falsely accused of ‘hate speech’.

In terms of touching on a number of issues that people are irritated about, free speech, being lectured at by the right thinking, being told they're bigots, gammons etc, being told their views don't count because they're stupid/racist, being told off for being white/middle class/female/middle aged, huge dissatisfaction with the Police, and all the rest in the context of a major fracture between the governing and the governed, Harry Miller has made a perfectly timed intervention. This speaks to many people.

He discusses trans issues in his book “How to be right in a world gone wrong”. He basically says he doesn’t know what the answers are but leans towards supporting trans people mainly because they’re hated by people like Trump and Richard Littlejohn.

No disrespect to your thread OP but the discussion on LBC has turned into men going on at great length about themselves and their pet peeves.

If I've annoyed you OP, you know what to do ...

BlueHarry · 15/02/2020 14:32

Do hate crime reports ever get dismissed for wasting police time, or is the procedure to always log them regardless?

BlueHarry · 15/02/2020 14:44

noblegiraffe interesting what he says about in the book about the pendulum swinging when he hears a woman explain her concerns/fears, as that has not come across in his show at all. Though I must admit I switch him off a lot nowadays as his sanctimonious attitude grates on me. But you can hear his call with Posie Parker, I think it's on YouTube somewhere. There's no evidence of his pendulum there whatsoever.

Also, I remember years ago listening to his show, it must have been around seven/eight years ago because I can remember where I was working and that I was about 24 years old and quite enamored with JOB at that time, when I suddenly realised just how sexist he is.

There were two topics that really opened my eyes. One he was talking about the decision to let women serve on the front line and how it could be a distraction to men and mentioned a few times how he had enjoyed watching one of his colleagues walk up the stairs ahead of him (he liked her legs, fair enough but it was creepy), and two he was talking about sexual assault etc on public transport. I texted in about my experience as a 15 year old school girl in uniform being touched up on the bus by a much older man, and he read out my text. "But how did you know he wasn't accidentally jostling you and he was actually groping you. How did you know?" It upset me because I bloody well knew. As I had said in my text, I'd shouted at the guy to stop touching me, and I was so embarrassed that I'd shouted because I was shy, but I knew it was no mistake when I felt his slimy hands travelling up and down my body multiple times!

Freespeecher · 15/02/2020 14:44

Maajid is probably my favourite pundit at the moment (which means I should be listening to his show. But I'm not. Oh well).

BlueHarry · 15/02/2020 14:47

The only reason I think JOB mentions this pendulum and the reason I think he now skirts around trans issues on his show, is because he has started to see other people (men) ask questions and raise points. I believe he is a misogynist, but I believe he doesn't want to draw too firm a line on it anymore because he has a teeny bit of concern that he will end up being "on the wrong side of history".

nauticant · 15/02/2020 14:49

This is what I wrote about James O'Brien on another thread:

For a while now I've assumed James O'Brien claiming "not to have seen it like that" is simply an act. He can do the beardy woke bro thing to earn points, then play the "not seen it like that" card when it's pointed out how he disregards the rights of, say, women, and does a performance of open mindedness to earn more points.

The notable thing about O'Brien's "not to have seen it like that" is that even when he says "oh, I see now", within a short time he's back to his previous beardy woke bro-compatible views.

Xanthangum · 15/02/2020 14:49

He basically says he doesn’t know what the answers are but leans towards supporting trans people mainly because they’re hated by people like Trump and Richard Littlejohn.

May be worth mentioning that this was the only equivocal issue raised - his stance was pretty clear on everything else.

And the other day he mentioned that he reckoned he had 'solved' the trans debate, and promised to discuss it soon. So maybe he is coming around....

I agree. And don't have high hopes for him having "solved" the trans debate but might be interesting to hear, maybe he'll prove me wrong.

I actually think it is the refusal of liberals to tackle difficult issues that aids the like of Trump. It is pure idiocy just to declare yourself on the opposite side of someone else however repugnant that person may be.
