Not strictly feminism I know, but......I had an anonymous twitter profile but got a lifetime ban for saying something outrageous. I am able to use my old twitter profile but that is in my rl name so not as useful or anywhere near as much fun.
I have tried to set up new anonymous profiles a couple of times from different devices which seems to work for half an hour, then I get banned. Not sure if it’s because I access from my phone, if It’s the IPaddress of my internet (I don’t even know what year means)
Does anyone know if I could set up a new twitter profile, would twitter still ban me if I used a new phone (due an upgrade) or is it likely to be the IP address. Any idea how to sort it?

Can't guarantee this will work as don't know how they are detecting banned users.
But try new phone with new number, set up a new email address on that phone to use on new twitter account and don't connect to your home wifi network just use mobile data

Oh ffs I just typed out a whole long message and it deleted... Are the twitter tentacles in this thread too!?

To break down what I said in the deleted original:

If you turn your modem off for 5 minutes and then turn it on again you will be given a new IP address

You will need to erase all histories and cookies too beforehand so when you log on it will seem like a “new” device

The same thing is going to happen again. As soon as you tweet or like something that goes against the grain, they will ban you, so a new phone won’t protect or help you if someone decides to take umbridge with what you’re saying.

My advice, if you are upgrading your phone, is to keep your old phone. SIM cards cost £1 at the newsagents although you might have to activate them by spending a £5 or £10 pay as u go voucher, but it will give you a number. You can use this number - not associated to you - to sign up to/remain on twitter without giving your proper number.

Internet safety is precarious. If someone really wanted to find something out about you when you have provided a phone number, they can.

You'll have a MAC number for your device - that's what they're recognising (it can't be changed).

I put some information about the cryptoparty and open evenings where you can learn about privacy in this thread:

Meant to say via my last point it’s better to provide Twitter an easily throwaway pay as u go number rather than something that is contracted to you and your name, address, etc

MoleSmokes · 14/02/2020 04:53

It seems Twitter doesn't always drill down to MAC addresses as I have seen these reports:

  • communal wifi in an apartment block: one GC person got banned then immediately so did others using the same wifi but posting nothing controversial
  • mum with a GC account banned: then straight away so was her young son, using same wifi but different device and with an account that was specifically a "football club fan account'. They complained about it but got nowhere.

They were all using different phone numbers and different devices but were, presumably, identified as "the same" or "sock accounts" because of the shared wifi.

My technical knowledge only goes as far as sharing this info, not explaining it Smile

Thanks so much everyone. Very helpful.

Burner phone the way ahead I think.

All the tech stuff hurts my head so this it a bit clearer, thanks.

And don't use your home wifi for that burner phone, your router IP address doesn't change

FannyCann · 14/02/2020 08:30

I have a basic Nokia that doesn't do wifi or anything like that. Battery lasts for weeks so it's there for emergencies. I switch it on about once every two months to send myself a text to keep the account open. So I gave twitter that number. Once I was in I deleted the number from my account but who knows if they've still got it somewhere?
I suppose if they have a record of the number then the mobile network could be approached. They'd have to hand over my account details - would they do that I wonder?

Ereshkigalangcleg · 14/02/2020 08:51

I have to make social media posts for my work account as part of my job. I've been a bit concerned about this recently. I never do them from the device I usually tweet from (and my tweets aren't that bad objectively, but you know 1984, Harry and all that). But I was at an event the other day and I posted for work several times using venue Wi-fi on a device I only use for work stuff and also checked my own Twitter on my personal device without thinking, using the same venue Wi-fi.

I don't trust Twitter. Can they tell it's the same user based on third party info? Anyone know?

ArranUpsideDown · 14/02/2020 10:04

don't use your home wifi for that burner phone, your router IP address doesn't change

You can hard re-set your IP address via your router. (I need to do this sometimes.)

But, don't use your home wi-fi - excellent advice.

I use a VPN for most browsing. And I've altered the no-track settings on my phone.

If they hold events near you, I strongly recommend going along to a cryptoparty event (above) for a night of cybersecurity wonkery with charmingly knowledgeable people.

NotAGirl · 14/02/2020 10:17

Since the OP clearly indicated they weren't too sure what an IP address was I'm not sure the advice to go change settings on their router is helpful

Which is why I kept it simple Grin

ArranUpsideDown · 14/02/2020 10:31

I didn't advise anyone to change settings on their router - I gave it as a point of information because the OP etc. are probably not the only people reading this thread.

And I strongly advise the cryptoparty events because they have people who explain things very clearly. If you can, it's important to know how to switch off or reset phone settings.
