Transgender Gretna Green?

HelgaHere1 · 09/02/2020 20:25

This is the headline in the Scottish Sunday Times.
'Scottish legal move could create a ‘transgender Gretna Green’
Teenagers from across the UK could travel to Scotland to change their sex status after a legal change, campaigners say'

'Proposals to make it easier for people to change their legal sex status in Scotland could create a “transgender Gretna Green” for people to sidestep restrictions in England and Wales, campaigners say.

The Scottish Gender Recognition Reform Bill would reduce the age of eligibility from 18 to 16, cut the time required to live in their new gender from two years to six months and remove the need for medical treatment or a diagnosis of gender dysphoria.

It is open to people born in Scotland, including an estimated 720,000 now living elsewhere in the United Kingdom, and people from the rest of the UK living, working and studying in Scotland.'

The rest of the article is behind the paywall but this is the gist of the article.

Comments can be made by anyone on the proposed changes to the GRBill whether you are in Scotland or not here

720000 now?

How will that work with their passport that they will need to cross the border if the SNP have their way?

Take that, England and Wales!

Regards, Scotland Halo

I would guess that if you move to Scotland and live there for 6 months in your new gender you can then get the cert at 16 or any other age.

So kids popping to Scotland for higher education - first time away from home - can be immersed in the culture in the students union and leap at the chance. In my day the worst you could do is hook up with unsuitable partners or join a religious society.

Oh brilliant. Bravo Scotland, I hardly recognise you...

marvellousnightforamooncup · 10/02/2020 08:27

They've lost the plot.

SentimentalKiller · 10/02/2020 08:29

Scotland regresses to the 1950s and declares girls do ironing whilst boys climb trees
Change your body here if your brain is wrong

BahHumbygge · 10/02/2020 10:18

Could I identify as having been born in Scotland for the purposes of this process, if I so wished? Surely if one can change one’s sex on official documents, one could change their place of birth also?

Babdoc · 10/02/2020 13:27

The SNP are going all out to dance the wokey cokey, trying to show how ever so progressive they are, compared to England.
Meanwhile, their finance minister has resigned after trying to groom a schoolboy online and their ex leader is awaiting trial for attempted rape.
Progressive, my arse.

Thelnebriati · 10/02/2020 13:33

So the consultation is another sham.
Farewell democracy, it was nice while it lasted.

This is the SNP to a tee. Of course Alex Salmond's case comes up in March.
I have voted SNP in the past but I feel public profile outweighs common sense - look how woke and welcoming we are........ funny no one wants to live here- -- people need things like jobs, they forget trivial little things like that.

I don't think anyone has linked to this blog post by MurrayBlackburnMackenzie yet. It's interesting on what 'ordinarily resident in Scotland' might mean - though like so much in the GRRbill, it's not been clarified prior to the consultation.

Lordfrontpaw · 10/02/2020 16:12

And the crappy from the LGBT Scotland group. Argh.

TheProdigalKittensReturn · 10/02/2020 23:19

I'm overseas so for a while post the rise of the SNP I couldn't figure out why my dad hated them so much other than the residual "Tartan Tories" perception, but I'm starting to understand now. "So woke we've circled right back round up our own arses and into a coma" is not a good look.

bettybeans · 11/02/2020 01:28

Well that’s one way to boost the numbers at Scottish universities and colleges. 😕

bettybeans · 11/02/2020 01:30

Prodigal: To be fair to the SNP, Labour and Greens aren’t any different in this respect. Greens are demonstrably worse actually.

HelgaHere1 · 11/02/2020 06:50

Giving the vote to 16 year olds was likely to increase the number voting for independence, I can remember being fiercely for independence as a teen. A bit more circumspect now.
It will be difficult for them, because of this, to refuse 16 yearolds the right to change sex. Sad. Not a good thing.

Actually I think the LibDems may be strong contenders for the "wait, your policy says what?" award.

TheProdigalKittensReturn · 11/02/2020 07:48

I mean, as far as I'm aware at least nobody in the SNP claims to be able to see people's souls. Yet.

Aesopfable · 11/02/2020 09:42

It might be the Greens driving this as much as the SNP as the SNP are a minority government and need the Greens to get votes passed. The Greens are all ‘list’ MSPs so no one voted for those individuals.
