Help me respond to this that I've seen to be used in schools

This was posted in a teaching group I am part of and I'm struggling to articulate a response!

For context, I have a teenage DD who is diagnosed autistic who has been exploring chest binding and currently identifies as non-binary. I am massively concerned about what is influencing her and her vulnerability!

Help me respond to this that I've seen to be used in schools

How does this relate to safeguarding and breast ironing.

BitterAndOnlySlightlyTwisted · 31/01/2020 11:34

I can’t help you articulate your own response but mine would be “bollocks”! “Women are women regardless of sex”? Complete twaddle. I’m all for tolerance and acceptance of differences but this is all kinds of wrong. I suggest you have a look at the SafeSchoolsAllianceUK website on how to challenge this nonsense

T0tallyFuckedUpFamily · 31/01/2020 11:37

That’s abhorrent. How the fuck can any head teacher or board think that is an acceptable poster to put up in a school. This crap is only going to stop when the parents start taking the schools to court for not following single sex guidelines and putting their daughters in particular, at risk of abuse.

T0tallyFuckedUpFamily · 31/01/2020 11:39

One rape happens every day in schools, yet instead of dealing with that abuse of girls, the school boards are increasing the risk of male abuse of females, by taking away female spaces. Revolting.

SarahTancredi · 31/01/2020 11:42

And how does the school know which of its pupils are in danger of being married off on the holidays , raped , harassed etc

Wtf

T0tallyFuckedUpFamily · 31/01/2020 11:43

They don’t care about that, because it only happens to females. That doesn’t get them woke cookies.

HandsOffMyLangCleg · 31/01/2020 11:45

This is revolting - do schools think it's OK to promote self harm in children and magical thinking. It is factually incorrect of course.

Why don't they put up a poster saying anyone can walk on water, that if you die you will rise again, or that the earth can be whatever shape we feel comfortable with?

windycuntryside · 31/01/2020 11:45

I had to read that a few times before I could form an opinion, now I have, I really don’t like it. The poster, not my opinion.
The main problem for me is that it is presented in a way that seems to make sense, “everyone matters” and of course who will argue with that? The problem though is at why cost does “everyone matter”?

Floisme · 31/01/2020 11:47

I missed the girl wearing a chest binder at first. I think I would focus my objections around that.

rogdmum · 31/01/2020 11:47

I would contact Safe Schools Alliance (@SafeSchools_UK on Twitter). They might be able to give some advice.

Thelnebriati · 31/01/2020 11:49

Sex is still a protected characteristic so thats a no.

HandsOffMyLangCleg · 31/01/2020 11:51

Great piece on breast binding here by Dr Em

www.transgendertrend.com/breast-binding-sexual-objectification-grooming/

HandsOffMyLangCleg · 31/01/2020 11:53

Like breast ironing, breast-binding is an attempt to prevent the appearance of puberty in natal females. Could the increase in sexual harassment and sexual assault at schools be linked to British girls and women wishing to delay the appearance or prevent the appearance of their breasts?

NeurotrashWarrior · 31/01/2020 12:00

The image is sexist, despite that they'll claim it's not.

If women are women despite sex, it's sexist. It's based on "feeling" like a woman or "dressing/ looking" like a woman.

These are sexist stereotypes.

NeurotrashWarrior · 31/01/2020 12:03

I missed the breast binder too; I agree that's a safeguarding issue.

There's research on how damaging breast binding is because it's used to argue the case for mastectomies.

So basically if you don't fit into the box you need to hide/ remove your breasts.

The process behind this are the same as breast ironing; misogynistic and patriarchal oppressions leading to the control, hatred and damage of women's bodies.

NeurotrashWarrior · 31/01/2020 12:06

Hands

Yes I think so.

I remember wearing tops that would hide my breasts.

As a young adult doing martial arts I started wearing a sports bra that was more flattening than my shock absorber as I felt there was a sexist/ objectification attitude at times. I'd seen the looks and nudges directed at some women. Both good and bad.

Doyoumind · 31/01/2020 12:07

Apparently it shouldn't come down to body parts so why the hell are they showing someone with no breasts and no top in a skirt and someone with breasts that are bound? We have to see these parts to be told it's not about parts? Confused

Also, all people are important except fat or disabled people, by the looks of it. Not very inclusive.

Langbannedforsafeguardingkids · 31/01/2020 12:13

God that is awful, sexist claptrap. Sex is real, sex matters. Sexual dimorphism is the result of millenia of evolution. We can't just wipe that out because certain adult males want us to.

It's anti-science, sexist, and promotes self harm.

Sex matters, and then everyone should feel free to express their personality as long as they don't harm others. The end.

Please do complain and yes get SSA involved.

BovaryX · 31/01/2020 12:20

women are women regardless of sex

Hmm. The Newspeak dictionary is in print! Is this 'teaching aid' going to be used in schools?

Hadalifeonce · 31/01/2020 12:27

I think a little graphite maybe in order. Replace whatever with because, and add 't to can.
Job done, totally agree with being respectful to all people.

Mockers2020Vision · 31/01/2020 12:27

I'd check the provenance before complaining. The whole "No Outsiders" protest is full of fake materials created by troublemakers.

Hadalifeonce · 31/01/2020 12:27

Graffiti

ScapaFlo · 31/01/2020 12:39

I thought you meant change it with a pencil Grin

Barracker · 31/01/2020 12:51

Here's an alternative version
😉

Help me respond to this that I've seen to be used in schools
Thelnebriati · 31/01/2020 12:52

Brilliant, I'm totally stealing sharing that Grin
