Is the bush back?

So just watched last night's cha4 show about why women largely now remove all body hair. As a 53 year old - I trim/tidy as routine and bikini wax before holidays. I have in the past had a Hollywood and a Brazilian with a landing strip but that was in my 30s/40s. However, I understand going bare is a young thing. Out of interest - what are you guys all doing with your foofoos? And have any of you encountered judging by men?

I am a bit suspicious of the "cleaner" argument – it's like douching, it may be apparently cleaner but may also remove natural functions that you're better of keeping. But also I don't understand how having pubic hair that's always removed and regrowing can possibly feel nice. And on Naked Attraction, everyone's plucked bits look so manky, sore and ingrown.

EoinMcLovesCakeJumper · 31/01/2020 10:54

I can't say I've ever seen waxed pudenda that don't look a bit pimply and sore. If you're doing it for aesthetic reasons, I just don't understand how reddened chicken skin is more attractive than a proper bush.

But of course, this is where the arguments come in about cleanliness, or that it "feels nicer" or even enhances sex. Given that full pube removal wasn't the norm until less than 20 years ago, do people really think that women before then were all dirty and had miserable sex lives?

I think any man who brings up the "I don't want to get a mouthful of pubes" argument for waxing is probably doing oral sex wrong anyway.

Craftycorvid · 31/01/2020 16:42

I don’t think my historically miserable sex life had anything to to with the presence or absence of a bush Grin

ScrimshawTheSecond · 31/01/2020 16:45

No hair removal in this house. Smile

ScrimshawTheSecond · 31/01/2020 16:46

Body hair has several important functions. I had an article on it somewhere ...

ScrimshawTheSecond · 31/01/2020 16:49

It wasn't this one I had in mind, but there seems to be useful info here:

I’ve recently broken up with a man who only had hair on his legs, he was the vainest bugger I’ve ever met and said pubic hair was vile. We only lasted 10 weeks.

He shaved everything he could but drew the line at his legs. It looked odd to me.

I’m very dark haired anyway so am quite conscious not to let mine get out of control to the point I need to get the hedge trimmers out. It grows back ridiculously fast too and itches. My niece is 18 and said it’s pretty much unthinkable to have hair down there men or women.

My almost 17yr old ds shaved his all off ( in the downstairs hall Grin ) and is now regretting it. I’ve told him not to bow down to pressure so easily.

pettyprudence · 31/01/2020 17:02

38 yo, always have, and always will, have a bush. I tidy up the edges for swimming/holidays but that's about it. I did try it shaved once (in my early 20's) but neither I nor my now dh liked it (looked wierd, felt uncomfortable). I have never had a single man (who has seen/had contact with my bush!) ever complain or pass comment (It's been a very long time since anyone other than DH has been near it so I might be out of the loop)

lilgreen · 31/01/2020 17:04

Mine never went away! I only wax outside knickers/bikini . DH doesn’t care. He doesn’t either. Not the most attractive area so I think a bit of hair does wonders.

I think though that people who like the sensation personally don't really care whether people 100 years ago or 20 years ago had worse sex lives. FWIW, when I was younger and tried getting rid of it, the sensation was different and I can see why some people might really like it. Not worth the trouble involved for me, but whatever. People do a lot of sex enhancement stuff I think is too much trouble.

There have been other cultures that removed body hair, so it's not always a modern porn related thing.

EoinMcLovesCakeJumper · 01/02/2020 08:28

In the UK, though, full pubic hair removal was NOT the norm and there was no expectation that it would be done, up until about 20 years ago. It just wasn't. Other body hair is a different story, but even then I think leg-shaving is only about 100 years old for us because women's legs weren't seen in public until the 1920s.

I think it's disingenuous to start saying "But the ancient Greeks!" as if the current trend might have been somehow inspired by historical fashions from 2500 years ago. Which one are young people in their teens and 20s more likely to be influenced by - that or widely available internet porn?

iguanadonna · 01/02/2020 11:00

I'm 40, shave armpits and have legs waxed, but don't do anything to pubic hair. Tho mine doesn't grown anywhere outside knicker line; if it did then I would shave or wax for swimming costumes. My leg hair is all uneven and long and straggly so I'm glad to get rid of it, but idea of plucked genital zone doesn't appeal at all. Much prefer nice glossy bush.

EoinMcLovesCakeJumper

Sure, I don't think there is much doubt that the current trend was a crossover from porn.

I was really thinking of the comment that asked if some imagined that people around more than 20 years ago had dirty miserable sex lives. I think if there have been a variety of reasons people take to body hair removal, in different times and places, there are likely some things that people find they like about it, and those things can still apply even now when the trend has origins in media. Some people do seem to like the sensation change during sex, and some feel it cuts down on the feeling of sweatiness, or their pubic hair doesn't get messed up with things like vaginal discharge or blood, which may feel cleaner (though in terms of protection from pathogens I imagine it is actually less clean.)

lilgreen · 01/02/2020 20:10

Bush over stubble and spots any day.

TeiTetua · 01/02/2020 22:23

To add to Scrimshaw's collection of scholarly articles:

www.kevinmd.com/blog/2011/04/war-pubic-hair.html

But it might be significant that the article is by a middle-aged doctor. One wonders what young medical personnel do with their pubic hair. They should know that it's better to keep it, but even so, can they resist the pull of fashion?

NiceLegsShameAboutTheFace · 02/02/2020 17:17

If having no hair down there is cleaner why aren't we all bald as well!

I pretty much am Blush

AuntieMarys · 02/02/2020 17:26

If your nether regions resemble red chicken skin, you should sack your beautician!
I'm 60, waxed fully for donkeys years. I like it. My ex never ventured down there, so it wasn't for him.
And I don't resemble a 9 year old girl.

Ohyesiam · 02/02/2020 17:31

My bf is a midwife, and tells me that 70% of young women are still full Bush. It’s not a generation wide thing.

IHaveBrilloHair · 02/02/2020 17:33

I prefer not, I'm 42, DD tells me she cba so has the bush, she's 18.

IHaveBrilloHair · 02/02/2020 17:35

I absolutely do not resemble a young girl in any area, I can assure you I look every one of my years!

FannyFifer · 02/02/2020 17:47

I've always had a bush, I keep it reasonably trim, with a wee pube trimmer thing so it's not bursting out my pants
I wld feel totally creepy with no hair at all there like I was pretending to be a child or something.
Wouldn't dream of getting it waxed.

Apileofballyhoo · 02/02/2020 18:13

There's a thread in style and beauty about "intimate bleaching". Just shaking my head.

EoinMcLovesCakeJumper · 02/02/2020 18:30

Apileofballyhoo tbf, nobody is telling the OP on that thread that she ought to go ahead with the bleaching. The sad thing about it is that somewhere, there is a woman who feels self-conscious about the colour of her bumhole, which presumably even she doesn't see unless she's making a special effort with a mirror. It's the logical conclusion of the mania for making everything as smooth and sterile as possible.
