Over on Reddit's r/outoftheloop, there is much puzzlement over this issue and the comments are very interesting indeed.

So basically RP received quite a lot of hate for not including drag kings, bio queens, transqueens or any other 'variation' of drag. Ru has since said that he is only looking for talent (and charisma, uniqueness and nerve) and is happy for transqueens to compete providing they haven't started surgery (such as Monique, Peppermint and Gia). Loads of people have been pushing them to including transitioning queen's and bio queens as drag is an art form (keep in mind here that drag literally means "dressed as a girl").
Carmen Carrera (who was a contestant on RPDR season 3) has kicked off because the new line up for season 12 has been revealed and there are no transqueens, drag kings or bio queens again. So they're not saying that even with all the facts Ru still isn't being inclusive and therefore clearly doesn't see any value in other variations of drag. Carmen was a gay man on the show but came out as trans after her season and has now fully(?) transitioned.

Contestants on the show who look like women without tones of makeup (looking at you Courtney Act and Derrek Berry) have been criticised by the judges for not being 'draggy' enough. It's very clear what they are looking for and it is not the most convincing woman impersonator, but look is an important factor. I think Ru said having women and transwomen on the show competing wouldn't be fair as they don't go through the transformation, therefore they would have longer to work on their makeup or skills before the main stage or before their main challenge as they don't need to tuck or contour breasts etc. Plus most bio women don't need to create a female face from a man's face (soften their features, hide stubble etc). He compared it to using roids at the Olympic I think... Or performance enhancing drugs of some description.

Bloody hell..

Oddly, I'm not that surprised to hear this.

Biancadelrioisback · 26/01/2020 11:04

Personally I'm not a fan of drag kings. All the ones I've seen have basically just slapped in some facial hair and work a brightly colours suit. Part of the reason I enjoy drag is I love the costumes and makeup.

AshenQueen · 26/01/2020 11:14

It's all a bit strange. If trans women are women, why would they be upset at not being able to pretend to be women in a performance that's about men dressing up and pretending to be women, as then they would have to accept that they are men 🤔

It sounds like RuPaul agrees they are women and therefore can't compete in a show where men are the only competitors, so I'm confused why trans women would be upset.

Biancadelrioisback · 26/01/2020 11:21

Ashen because many believe that drag is an art form where you tell stories through costume and makeup. They see it as done in a feminine form (ie sinched waists) but the art isn't done as a female, therefore any all sexes and genders can perform. It's evolved (apparently) from just being about men dressing up as women

dolorsit · 26/01/2020 11:28

I’m on Ru’s side, but it is kind of funny how for ages Mumsnet was all “drag is womanface and a misogynistic attack” but trans people hate drag now so suddenly everyone’s done a 180 on drag.

No.

There are posters who enjoy drag as an art form on this forum. (I'm not one of them)

It's also possible to find drag as an art form distasteful but not to actively dislike individual performers.

And it's bloody easy to consider comparing someone like RuPaul to Hitler as idiotic hyperbole.

So don't infer that posters here are doing a 180 degree turn purely on the basis that (some) trans people dislike drag.

Give it a few posts and someone will claim we made Ru Paul our leader Confused

I agree with dolors there are posters on here who like drag and some that dont and some that dont have much of an opinion either way

I cant see any posters (that I remember) saying they love drag because some transpeople dont like it when they’ve posted to the contrary before

One assumes you remember a name or a thread this occurred on. I’d love to see it (if only to apologise for missing it 😀)
