At what point did you come to believe that the dictionary definition of woman was wrong, and why?

Are there any other words (other than ‘man’) in the dictionary that you believe are wrongly defined?

Oh dear. Should be transwomen in the title obviously.

Is this the whole 'adult human female' thing again?

You do realise that most people (including those who are trans inclusive) have no problem with this definition. It's only when it's used as a form of targeted harassment when people get a bit annoyed.

HorseWithNoGreyRockinghorse · 20/01/2020 21:43

I thought the poster in question was "targeted" at the Labour Party rather than transwomen?

aliasundercover · 20/01/2020 22:06

I'm still not sure how correctly defining women is ever harassment.

Voice0fReason · 20/01/2020 22:14

It matters.
Women are trying to define themselves in a way that does not include men who identify as women.
Women aren't deliberately targetting transwomen, they are protecting themselves and their rights.
And TRAs don't get a bit annoyed, they threaten us.

StillWeRise · 20/01/2020 23:12

I thought the police in Oxford had a problem with this definisition
Dr Harrop has a problem with it I understand

GenderfreeJoe · 20/01/2020 23:16

I have a problem defining transwomen as women. Because it's not true and I will not be forced to lie. The term transwoman is fine, but opening up the definition of woman to include males is not ok.

Coyoacan · 21/01/2020 12:36

That campaign was fantastic, but dictionaries do not define our language, they help us to understand it.

As for the difference between men and women? I adopted a dog that had been loved by a child and beaten by a man. That poor dog could tell men from women with no trouble at all.

Datun · 21/01/2020 12:38

It's only when it's used as a form of targeted harassment when people get a bit annoyed.

How can women defining themselves as a distinct group be harassment?

TheProdigalKittensReturn · 21/01/2020 12:44

If someone feels harassed by reality I'd suggest that that's something to discuss with their therapist rather than something to found a political movement on.

Datun · 21/01/2020 13:19

It's unhinged. In that case the equality act is targeted harassment.

sunshinesupermum · 21/01/2020 13:22

As VoiceofReason states women are being threatened by trans people.

We have fought long and hard for women's rights and they are just trying to overturn everything. Proud to be a TERF.

Quite so.

Time for my fave Shakey Line:

Juliet is widely misquoted. She does not say, 'a rose by any other name...' She says:

"What's in a name? That which we call a rose would smell as sweet by any other. So Romeo would, were he not Romeo called, retain that dear perfection which he owns."

A rose is that which we call a rose. We call it that because we perceive it to posses the essential qualities we wish to recognise by calling it that.

We can have a celing rose, a dog-rose or a watering-can rose. These are other things with their own distinct identity that have some superficial resemblance to an actual rose.

The essential qualities that make that-which-we-call-a-rose 'a rose' are its appearance, its scent, its family taxonomy and genetic composition, and the undeniable response it provoke in us when we see it, handle it and experience its presence.

I think that covers it.

ThumbWitchesAbroad · 21/01/2020 13:31

It comes to something when there are published articles out there claiming that biological sex is a social construct and that gender is the "true" sex of someone.

How any of this passes the rational brains of the allies is utterly beyond me - it's seriously like mass hypnosis or something.

As for all the vitriol that JK Rowling got for her supposedly transphobic tweet - well that just shows how utterly irrational everyone who believes this stuff has become.

And not just irrational - threatening, hate-filled, violent bullies!
Well I'm not falling for it.
Transwomen are welcome to dress how they like, act like their steretypical version of "woman", call themselves she if they want to - but they can fuck off when it comes to trampling all over biological women's rights.

GirlDownUnder · 21/01/2020 13:35

A rose is that which we call a rose. We call it that because we perceive it to posses the essential qualities we wish to recognise by calling it that.

And if we bastardise language beyond the point of mutual comprehension, I'm going to be pretty miffed if I order a dozen roses, and I receive half a box of Roses' chocolates.

Mockers2020Vision · 21/01/2020 13:58

Now suppose Romeo had followed Juliet's advice. He could doff his name, put on a dress and call himself Shirley. But he'd still be that-which-we-called-Romeo, and still be a Montague in his genes, whatever he called himself.

SameOldHorrorStory · 21/01/2020 14:38

How many legs does a dog have if you call his tail a leg? Four. Saying that a tail is a leg doesn't make it a leg.
