Tavistock face backlash over removing book from library

Sunday Telegraph reporting that the Tavistock is facing a backlash from staff after withdrawing the book "Inventing Transgender Children and Young People" from its shelves.

Co-author Dr Heather Brunskell-Evans is quoted as saying she believes it was removed because "its ideas are unpalatable to some people".

A Trust spokesman says it was removed pending investigation of a serious complaint about the content of the book.

Can't see this has been posted already but apologies if I have missed it.

Holy crap.

There is a good article posted in Quilette that mentions the backlash HBE faced after publishing this book.

This is a step too far.

A Trust spokesman says it was removed pending investigation of a serious complaint about the content of the book.

I could stand knowing if the book is being criticised for errors in scholarship, for breach of the law in some way, or because somebody is objecting to the content of the book.

Someone's "offended" most likely.

Offended by the idea it's bad to sterilise and mutilate children....

Mockers2020Vision · 19/01/2020 13:11

On cold days like these a book-burning is a great place to warm your hands.

ScapaFlo · 19/01/2020 14:17

This book costs over 77 quid on Amazon!

ScrimshawTheSecond · 19/01/2020 17:04

Will they be arranging a special bookburning, or just chucking it on the general Harry Potter one?

MoleSmokes · 19/01/2020 19:09

The Tavistock and Portman NHS Trust instructed lawyers to try to get a veto on what was in the book pre-publication. (Apologies and I stand to be corrected if it was a different book by the same authors!) They failed. Maybe this is their rearguard action rather than a complaint from a member of staff?

I'm afraid I don't really understand this story. Is the Tavistock library for Tavistock staff or for Tavistock patients?

RicketyClickety · 19/01/2020 21:08

@ScapaFlo I think the cheapest way to get it is via Cambridge Scholars using discount code 'Transgender20' during checkout to claim a 20% discount. Still comes to just under £50 plus p&p. Very much priced for a small print run for libraries and academics. I'd love them to do a mass market version.

Ah yes, the book burners are definitely on the right side of history...

MoleSmokes · 19/01/2020 22:36

RicketyClickety Thank you for that info. I would expect it to be for staff rather than patients. There might be something on the Tavistock website.

An NHS Trust that size would normally have a Librarian and Library service for the whole Trust but a specialist service like GIDS might have some books of its own. The article talks about the Tavistock & Portman rather than GIDS so it is possible that the "complaint" might be nothing to do with GIDS.

ScapaFlo · 20/01/2020 00:03

RicketyClickety thanks for that

I hope Dr Brunskell-Evans gets a Freedom of Information admission or statement about this. This must be justified in print, with no backtracking or semantic wriggling allowed afterwards. No "blaming and retraining" of "an inexperienced member of staff", either! Angry

HandsOffMyRights · 20/01/2020 07:03

Well, we can't be allowed to question 'the clinical and ethical basis for allowing children to undergo gender transition' now can we?

Tells me everything I need to know about this regime.
Why the censorship, the secrecy, the lies? Oh I know...
