Are only boys allowed to have a naughty streak in them? What happens if girls too are mischievous and come across as brats? Defying stereotypes associated with naughty and mischievous girls.

Ah!

Mischievous and bratty girls in literature...two of my favourite childhood heroines, inspirations; Little My from the Moomins and Dido Twite, the creation of Joan Aiken

DD has a mischievous streak, loves a good prank, getting quite good at sarcasm and come backs. At home she gets away with most of it and if she takes it too far we don't get cross but explain why. I drilled into her that she has to know her audience and things that don't bother us might upset others. She's quite good at managing different environments.

Sounds like we're doing similar with Dd, Panic. It's working well, she's got a wicked sense of humour and she's learning very quickly to read the room. She takes more chances at home and I let her away with a lot more than I was let away with at her age. And she's allowed be cross and stroppy when she feels it. Sometimes she needs help to understand the context of her annoyance but I was (and still am) far too good and compliant and I'm delighted she's more sparky and bolshy.

Reassuring to know so many of us enjoy and welcome the naughty streak in our girls!

I remember reading a two part novel as a child. There were 3 child characters, a brother(mummy's boy and slightly wet) ,sister (my favourite character) and their female cousin(quiet, shy, tempered, docile)! The sister was brilliant!Slightly spoilt and bratty, very mischievous and loud mouthed, opinionated and stubborn. I identified with her so much and loved her.

In part two they're all grown ups... it starts going dark. Her love interest is not suitable, their romance is sad and depressing and troubled. To top it all off she gets breast cancer and kills herself. The good, quiet girl and the mummy's boy fall inlove and live happily ever after, inheriting the plantation and what not. Even now I remember being heartbroken and angry at the unfairness of it all.

There's a difference between allowing your child to be a dick (be it male or female) and allowing them to have a voice,a personality, an opinion.
