This looks like it has been a brilliant meeting, some great speakers.
Hope there will be a write up tomorrow but if anyone wants to read the live tweets from tonight the hashtags are #fwsedin and #edinfws

Oh bum I meant to go to that. Damn

marvellousnightforamooncup · 16/01/2020 22:10

I usually have an evening class tonight so thought I couldn't go so put it out of my mind. Class cancelled but I'd forgotten about it. Damn.

stumbledin · 16/01/2020 22:58

There's some reporting on their twitter thread twitter.com/ForwomenScot

stumbledin · 16/01/2020 23:03

LGB Alliance seems to have launched a Scotland branch

lgballiance.org.uk/scotland/

New Campaign:
Gender Recognition Act
For years now, lesbian, bisexual and gay rights have been progressively undermined by deliberate attempts to confuse biological sex with the notion of ‘gender identity’. This has now come to a head with the Scottish government’s proposed reform of the Gender Recognition Act (announced at the end of 2019). We believe this misguided experiment is a mortal threat to our rights in Scotland. Undermine the reality of biological sex and you undermine the meaning of same-sex attraction.

I've been trying to follow it on twitter, but the information I've gathered is piecemeal. Will transcripts or videos be available to view so that i can see what each speaker said?

rodgmum · 17/01/2020 07:32

I was there. The event was video’d so hopefully it will be posted somewhere.

NightLion · 17/01/2020 07:34

That's great. Looking forward to viewing it.

Cuntysnark · 17/01/2020 07:36

Really looking forward to seeing the videos of the speeches. I know one of the speakers so am ridiculously excited about seeing that one!

littlbrowndog · 17/01/2020 08:31

💪💪💪💪

NonnyMouse1337 · 17/01/2020 09:04

It was a good event. I couldn't see any protesters outside the venue. It was great to have no hassle while entering or leaving.

Hopefully the videos will be up for viewing soon.

Speakers were great, especially Rhona Hotchkiss. Some of the comments from the audience were very moving, especially the ones from the detransitioner and abuse survivor. It was very brave for both of them to speak up the way they did. I found it hard to keep my eyes dry! Heartfelt concern and pain from the woman involved in children's services and how they are under intense lobbying and worried to speak up publicly for fear of reprisals. So much respect for all these women doing what they can in their own way to push back against the trans ideological juggernaut.

Good to see male allies too. Lots of claps and cheers at the announcement of LGB Alliance being launched soon (Saturday I think? The Scottish division anyway).

An interesting point mentioned by one of the panel, might have been the FWS member. She talked to a policewoman who was providing security at one of the FWS events last year and got onto the topic of female officers having to search males because of all these self-id rules being pushed through.
Male staff clearly don't want to search females and female staff obviously don't want to search males, but these sorts of orders are being pushed from above. Policewoman said senior female staff will carry out the searches on males that claim to be women, because they don't want to let the junior female recruits have to deal with such things.
Clearly no woman should have to be dealing with such uncomfortable situations as part of their work, but I was struck by the staff understanding the implications of these 'inclusive' orders and senior female staff doing what they could to take the pressure off from junior female staff.

The trans lobby and their shouty activists have tried very hard to paint a picture of everyone having voluntarily jumped on this brave, new , progressive ship and it's simply a handful of bitter old women and right-wing extremists moaning about nothing.
The reality is very different once you start talking to people and listening to their stories and interactions with the general public. There is a lot of pressure from the top of various organisations and institutions. Everyday people know something isn't right, but might feel isolated or intimidated to speak up, yet there are signs of women and men doing what they can to mitigate these sweeping transgressions of boundaries and safeguards.

There's still lots to do in building awareness and support among the public, but it takes a few brave women and men to lead the way and others will start to find their voice. Thanks to all those who have tirelessly worked in resisting this ideology and putting their careers and public reputations on the line.

Amen. you good sisters. xx

RadicalFern · 17/01/2020 10:29

I wish I'd known about this event! I'd like to meet some likeminded women in Edinburgh.

BovaryX · 17/01/2020 10:38

Nonnymouse
That's really interesting. Have you seen the Trigger interview with Harry Miller? He makes precisely the same point about searches. He says that the upper echelons of the police have succumbed to institutional capture.

The higher echelons of the police are signing pledges to Stonewall

NonnyMouse1337 · 17/01/2020 10:49

RadicalFern I'm sure there will be other events soon enough. I'd recommend signing up to the For Women Scotland newsletter. I think they send out an email every few weeks with an update on what's going on, templates to help you email politicians or fill in consultations as well as informing when the next events are taking place. Smile

LatinforTelly · 17/01/2020 10:52

RadicalFern sign up to the For Women newsletter on forwomen.scot and you'll be sent info on forthcoming meetings.

I had hoped to get to this but children's logistics made it impossible in the end - I'm quite a way away. So pleased it was well attended and will look forward to watching the speeches when they're available. Thanks for the info, NonnyMouse.

I now need to summon up the courage to speak to my new MP who is woker than woke.

NonnyMouse1337 · 17/01/2020 10:55

BovaryX yes I watched the Harry Miller interview and it was quite eye opening. Staff across all sectors, including police, definitely feel pressured to go along with these newfangled guidelines and don't feel able to challenge their bosses because it could put them in a precarious situation.

rodgmum · 17/01/2020 11:08

Nonny just to add to your points about the police. I have a friend in the police and she also has a serious concern about the fact that female police officers (at least where she works) haven’t been given training on how to properly search men and vice versa. This is a big safety concern that has been flagged up, but not yet addressed, at least in one part of Scotland!

littlbrowndog · 17/01/2020 11:10

Wtaf is happening in Scotland

13 MSPs attended a meeting at the Scot Parliament the other evening on GRA reform.
@ForwomenScot meeting last night confirmed they would not name them.
We live in a time where our parliamentarians seeking to inform themselves feel the need to remain anonymous.😳

littlbrowndog · 17/01/2020 11:11

Where elected politicians are afraid to be named

weebarra · 17/01/2020 11:14

I was gutted to miss this but DH was stuck in traffic having left work early to let me get away. Looks like there are a few of us around Edinburgh!

ScrimshawTheSecond · 17/01/2020 11:34

Sorry to have missed this. Hope there will be updates, sounds like it was an informative meeting.

NonnyMouse1337 · 17/01/2020 11:40

female police officers (at least where she works) haven’t been given training on how to properly search men and vice versa.

Sounds like a very well thought out policy then.... Not! 🙄

NonnyMouse1337 · 17/01/2020 11:46

littlbrowndog shocking, isn't it? I can't believe this is how political debate around women's rights and protections are playing out in the 21st century.

stumbledin · 17/01/2020 14:23

Nnony and others, thanks for the feedback.

Almost sounds like there is more to fightback against in Scotland.

But it really helps to know that all over the country women are coming together to organise!

CharlieParley · 17/01/2020 15:03

If you're in Scotland and not yet in touch with other GC women but would like to do so, please send me a message. If you're not too far away, I'm happy to come and meet you or will try to put you in touch with someone local to you.

As the last woman to comment at yesterday's meeting said though, be brave and also reach out to your friends and neighbours. Talk to them about it one-on-one over tea and cake. You might find you have more likeminded women in your life than you think.
