I've seen that body positivity activist Megan Crabba aka instagrammer bodyposipanda has revealed today that she is dating trans man and activist Kenny Jones. Absolutely no problem with that, I wish them every happiness. My question is though, how can body positivity and trans activism be compatible? To me they seem to be diametrically opposite. From the posts on Megan's page, we can see that body positivity isn't just about celebrating all types of bodies, with which I could kind of see a link to trans activism. Body positivity is also about calling out diet culture and excessive focus on looks, which presumably extends to opposition to bodily alteration procedures. If body positivity is about celebrating the body you are in, how is this compatible with taking the damaging medication and surgical procedures that are required for transition? Kenny also clearly spends a lot of time in the gym, possibly taking in a restrictive high protein diet to build muscle, how can this fit in with the 'intuitive eating' of body positivity? Trans people pretty much dedicate their lives to their appearance, I just don't see how this is compatible with the body positive ethos. Is it just that it's bad to alter your body to make it conventionally attractive in terms of your birth sex? Seems hypocritical. I'm not a fan of influencers such as the Kardashians who push diet products, but I find there is a double standard going on here. It all seems rather spiteful towards slim, conventionally attractive women. It also strikes me that Megan herself advertises beauty products via her site, but because she's overweight then this is somehow portrayed as virtuous. She's still peddling tat that promises things it won't deliver, what's the difference between that and selling diet products? I just don't see a consistent logic in this movement.
