www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/home-news/pregnant-woman-sacked-discrimination-work-baby-tribunal-employment-a9278736.html

“A woman who was sacked by a leading beauty brand because she was eight months pregnant has been contacted by hundreds of others who say they have also faced discrimination at work while expecting a baby.

Helen Larkin was awarded £17,303 by an employment tribunal on Thursday over her unfair dismissal from the Liz Earle Beauty Company.

The 38-year-old, from Portsmouth, told The Independent a new senior employee saw her pregnancy as “standing in the way” of a company restructure, and her applications for two other positions were rejected without interview because she would soon be taking maternity leave.

She said the “sexist treatment” the company subjected her to is part of a wider problem in which women across the UK face unfair discrimination because of their pregnancy.
Ms Larkin, who represented herself in the tribunal, said: “I have had hundreds of women reach out to me from different companies, across all sectors, saying they have also experienced similar treatment. So many have been silenced or did not know what to do.

“Hopefully my case will raise awareness of the scope and breadth of the problem of pregnancy discrimination and make businesses look at their processes and procedures, as well as encouraging other women to speak up and realise they can take these companies on by themselves.”'

Hi all, I’m the one who took them to tribunal. In reply to your questions...yes, I refused to sign NDA as I had gone through too much to stay silent, yes I’ve lost out on a lot of money due to this, the ‘senior employee’ was actually female and has already left to work for French Connection and yes she gets off scott free and finally - it’s been a very very tough week, but I can now use my voice to help others. Thank you

Well done hcoe x

VinandVigour · 12/01/2020 17:35

hcoe21 I had similar prior to having my second child, but decided not to go through with tribunal as I felt so vulnerable. I’m in awe! 💐

spongedog · 12/01/2020 17:39

@hcoe21 well done! For standing up for you, but for others who perhaps are not able to do the same.

Are you able to discuss any other outcomes or was it just personal finance settlement? How can employment tribunals keep seeing discrimination against WOMEN (pregnant women) and not do anything more.

Uncompromisingwoman · 12/01/2020 17:40

Congratulations hcoe21 And you represented yourself?! That takes great courage. Flowers

I salute you

@hcoe21 Well done! I work for another well known luxury goods company (which most woman on here aspire to own an item from) and although they did not doing anything illegal whilst I was pregnant, they certainly made my life as difficult as possible. I'm not telling them I'm pregnant this time around until the legal cut off point. I do hope you can enjoy your new baby. x

Good work - you've not only stop up for yourself, you've probably made life better for other women.

DramaAlpaca · 12/01/2020 17:58

Well done hcoe21.

ThinkPositiveThoughts · 12/01/2020 18:03

Thank you hcoe21 for speaking up for pregnant women and mothers, no doubt at great personal cost.

Can’t believe this is still an issue in 2020.

OhHolyJesus · 12/01/2020 18:13

Another post to say thank you, by doing what you did you stood up for women everywhere, it was brave. It's 2020 FFS, appalling this still goes on.

Was the senior female employee a mother? I'm intrigued. Mother or not it's just shit.

I'm sure it's been hell, you made it through though. All power to you x

That's pretty heroic. I hope you manage to find a better job if you decide to return to work. Sorry you went through this.

Apileofballyhoo · 12/01/2020 18:16

hcoe well done. I hope pregnancy/birth goes/went well, and this doesn't prevent you furthering your career. Flowers

CalmFizz · 12/01/2020 18:32

Well done to you hcoe, I'd like to thank you for taking the financial hit And having the conviction to make your poor treatment public. It doesn't seem right that a company can buy silence when they've behaved illegally, if they're were prepared to offer a sum for settlement they accept they've done wrong doing and you shouldn't be penalised twice over.

Hope you're having a lovely time with your new addition to the family Flowers

The damning findings are out and shamefully, @hcoe21 has still not received an apology.

Well done to hcoe21.

Blast bugger and botheration. I have some Liz Earle cleanse and polish left. Should I carry on using it then buy something else or just bin it??

Cuntysnark · 08/04/2020 07:16

I salute you hcoe21

TheClitterati · 08/04/2020 08:36

£17000 is not much is it, considering the tribunal found is favour of @hcoe21 ?

Fantastic you took them on & won, but I'm shocked you weren't awarded more ££. I take it there were no punitive damages awarded?
