Funding for VAW projects by Scottish Government requires they provide services to trans

" ... “To be eligible for funding, applicants are required to demonstrate the following in their application…Ensure that your service is inclusive to lesbian, bisexual, trans and intersex (LBTI) women. An LBTI Inclusion Plan should be submitted along with your application.”

To be eligible for funding…ensure your service is inclusive to trans women.

This condition is extremely problematic to organisations such as Women’s Aid who have traditionally been proud to run a by-women-for-women service, and they rely on the single-sex exceptions (Schedule 3, Part 7, 26-28) and the Genuine Occupational Requirements (Schedule 9, Part 1, 1) in the Equality Act to do so – these allow for the exclusion of all men, if it can be objectively justified, also excluding transwomen (with or without a Gender Recognition Certificate). Examples given in the Explanatory Notes specifically mention women-only domestic abuse units and sexual assault counselling services as being legitimate uses of the single-sex exceptions.

This leads to the very concerning situation of organisations compelled to either forego applying for essential funding if they wish to remain women-only, or cede their rights to use an important part of UK legislation. ... "

(Sorry if it looks like I'm highlighting Scottish Government, just the excellent work of forwomen.scot in revealing these issues. Have absolutely no doubt that other Government's funding has the same criteria. But as we know women working in the VAW sector in England do not speak out about women's sex based rights.)

Well, fuck

TitianaTitsling · 09/01/2020 20:21

Fuck me, what is it with the SG and this matter?!

GrinitchSpinach · 09/01/2020 20:33

I’m sure there was a thread in the past few months in which a poster in the international aid/development sector mentioned this kind of funding requirement constraining work in Africa and elsewhere. I’ve searched but can’t find it at the moment.

Anyway, this is to say: there is a huge global push for the abolition of women-only services, and it ain’t coming from vulnerable women and girls.

You have to wonder at someone who can withdraw funding from abuse victims.

If VAW organisations provide support for women who are trans (ie transmen, NBies and other people OFAB who do not identify as women) then they are inclusive to lesbian, bisexual, trans and intersex (LBTI) women.

JellySlice

That's clever - I wonder if that would work?

ScrimshawTheSecond · 09/01/2020 23:30

It is clever, but I can't see it working, because some people won't allow single sex spaces, full stop.
