The main gist of the reforms is reducing the wait for the certificate from 2 years to 3 months. This is for everyone 16 and over in Scotland.
This is the reason given - ''This was seen as very difficult for some or as risking trans people being exposed to prejudice or verbal or physical abuse. Reasons given included problems created when an individual’s personal documents are inconsistent, or do not match the gender presented, meaning that they are forced to reveal their status when they would not otherwise choose to do so.''
Which seems a bit confused to me.
In the last consultation on GRA in Scotland 60% were in favour of the changes.
As anyone in the UK can comment on this reform bill here
consult.gov.scot/family-law/gender-recognition-reform-scotland-bill/ others may wish to contribute with their views..
This is the ministers foreward www.gov.scot/publications/gender-recognition-reform-scotland-bill-consultation-scottish-government/ on the second page is a link on how to respond (online document) and where to send it.
A link at the bottom of that article take you to the next page Chapter 2 : the origins of the GRA Act and Chapter 3:The reasons to reform it etc.
Quite interesting reading as the tone seems to have changed.
