Only came 5 years too late or perhaps longer.
I hope they have started to take a look at themselves and shifting their editorial stance because I really used to like that newspaper but it has gone reallly downhill and doubling down on its stance that most of the readers don’t agree with (hence the falling sales). I don’t particularly like the Daily Mail but they don’t shy away from stories. They may edit them at a slant for their readership but I’ve never known them to simply not write an article on something happening in the news like the Guardian does. I’ve always never known them (bar articles on injunctions or ongoing legal matters) to close comments because the comments below the line won’t agree with them. They know what their readers like and it’s only a handful of articles over the years where the consensus of the majority is that they didn’t agree with the journalist/article. By contrast, I’d say half of the Guardian articles that do allow comments contain lots that basically say WTF are you going on about? I’ve seen people on there accuse there being a right wing invasion on the site, upvoting comments that go against the values of the paper but I personally think they have lost their way.
There is an article in there about Ricky Gervais at the Golden Globes. Ricky Gervais gave what most consider an excellent speech, calling out the hypocrisy of Hollywood and shaming tech companies for not paying tax and using child labour, something you would think the Guardian would be applauding. But they have an article trashing him, saying his career could be over and the majority of the comments are along the lines of “were you watching the same thing? It was great”. I can only put it down to them being completely clueless or needing a reason to go after Ricky after his trans comments and thought this would put the boot in and allow comments without having to directly report on it and have closed comments.
I am not a fan of that paper anymore but do hope they sort themselves out or they won’t be around by 2030.
