Did anyone else hear this yesterday? He was very entertaining, I thought, and it's worth a listen.
But what really struck me was when he said how much he wanted to be a girl when he was young, but then went off to boarding school and suddenly realised he loved being a boy. It made me think how lucky he was to be born 60 years ago. If he was born in the last decade, there's a good chance that he's have been labelled as tg.

He was as excellent and entertaining as I was hoping for. The one single bum note in the whole programme was ...* [See spoiler below]

He's commented about his fluid identity before. I'd like for him one day to say what he really thinks about the gender identity ideology but I'm not sure it's quite his style to go to war over this. I'd be delighted to be proved wrong though.

SPOILER:
... him selecting "vegetables" as his luxury item and this being allowed.

GrimDamnFanjo · 06/01/2020 14:06

I'm quite fond of Rupert. I think it's a real shame he apparently lost out on roles being Out.

nauticant · 06/01/2020 14:14

This might sound horrible but I suspect that if Rupert had not had the significant disappointments/failures in his life but it had been success piled on success, he'd be a far less interesting person to hear from.

Melroses · 06/01/2020 14:37

Totally shocked by the vegetables Shock but Rupert Everett is definitely interesting. People who have disappointments and failures and are able to articulate their thoughts around this are worth a listen. (Especially for those of us who struggle with this Grin)

Michelleoftheresistance · 06/01/2020 14:56

I'm sure he's said before that had genderism been around in his childhood he would have transitioned in an attempt to better cope with his sexuality and gender non conformity, and he's grateful this didn't happen to him.

TheVanguardSix · 06/01/2020 14:59

I adore him.
I loved his books Vanished Years and Red Carpets and Other Banana Skins.

Pipandmum · 06/01/2020 15:00

Yes @Michelle I recall him saying he's happy he didn't have to deal with the option of transitioning.
Read his books they're really good.

Duckyneedsaclean · 06/01/2020 15:00

Here's where he's spoken about this before - "thank god the world of now wasn't then, because of be on hormones"

Duckyneedsaclean · 06/01/2020 15:01

*I'd, not of

Devereux1 · 06/01/2020 15:10

Haven't heard it OP, but thanks for highlighting it, I'll catch up. He's a wonderfully interesting character, and I'm sure you're absolutely right. If he was born recently, his parents would have him in the Tavistock and he'd be scheduled for surgery. Sad

marvellousnightforamooncup · 07/01/2020 14:35

I love that article. He's right about teens and gender. It is such a confusing time when you're going through puberty and school can be a very harsh environment. You're only just properly learning about the opposite sex. Much better to be a goth for a while and hide behind hair dye and makeup and music until you get yourself together.

MrsToddsShortcut · 07/01/2020 22:15

I love Rupert Everett and he was one of the first big celebs who spoke out about it. Even three years ago it was possible...

For anyone who hasn't read Red Carpets and Other Banana Skins , it's worth it purely for the chapter on the making of Hearts of Fire (if anyone around my age remembers that 'gem' of a film!) which had me in tears of laughter.

Siameasy · 07/01/2020 23:12

I like him and yes fortunate that he got the chance to grow up as a gay man
Actually my friend, a gay man, told me when he was a teen he wondered if he was a girl, he was so confused.

nauticant · 10/01/2020 09:10

It's the Desert Island Discs repeat. Get Radio 4 on if you want to catch Rupert Everett being fabulous.

Clymene · 10/01/2020 09:19

I'm listening again now. How lovely to hear someone say ' I very much enjoyed being homosexual'

thatdamnwoman · 10/01/2020 09:42

Listening to it now and it's so unusual to hear someone talk openly and joyfully about being gay and not using the word gender all the time! Radio 4 is absolutely peppered these days with woke young things, mainly woman, speaking clever word-salad with a heavy scattering of 'gender' and 'LGBTQ'. I'm sure they all have higher degrees in something cool but I suspect they're one of the many reasons listeners are fleeing Radio 4.
