LBC solicitors advert

Tuning into LBC for the first time today (cheers BBC Radio for ignoring the Iran situation) and heard an advert for a firm of solicitors specialising in representing men undergoing divorce and getting a fair deal for them. I'm absolutely gobsmacked! The whole advert (and their website) is set up to make men think they're getting a raw deal in the divorce courts.

Women have been getting a raw deal in divorces throughout history. We're nowhere near equal when it comes to divorce and this is just another way of men thinking they are hard done by party!

Evidence?

Lottapianos · 03/01/2020 18:16

Those adverts have been on LBC for ages. I find them quite shocking too. The tagline for the form is 'a partner men can count on' Hmm

Madvixen · 03/01/2020 18:41

To which part Starlink?

There must be a market for them that outweighs any blowback.

AutumnRose1 · 03/01/2020 19:04

Um...
I can’t say I’m an expert on this but I was never up for marriage because of combining finances.

If it’s the first firm I found on google it’s aimed at HNWI which is a lot different than ordinary cases.

Then again, in many ways, the less you have the more it matters. I’d be living in half a flat if I’d married the boyfriend I was with when I bought - he was very keen on marriage and buying property together.

I’ve got two female friends who did have to hand over a lot of cash in divorce on account of having much higher earnings etc.

I don’t think I can object to firms marketing how they wish. Would you object to a firm aimed at women.?

UptightFunk · 03/01/2020 19:08

Ah I absolutely HATE that advert. Fucking winds me right up. It's the epitome of everything that is wrong with how divorce is seen by men. Only hear it during the Nick Ferrari show which is about right....

Akire · 03/01/2020 19:13

Yes been on for ages, they get away with focusing on maximising the relationship you have with your children. Making it sound like without their help you couldn’t afford the petrol money to see them

MrsBertBibby · 03/01/2020 19:16

Heh, I nearly took up a locum role with them, I was fascinated to see what they were like. All fell through, sadly.

AutumnRose1 · 03/01/2020 19:31

Oh, from the added description I’m guessing it’s not the firm I thought!

siring1 · 03/01/2020 19:33

Why shouldn't men get a fair deal?

HorseWithNoAnecdotes · 03/01/2020 19:41

Who said men shouldn't get a fair deal?

Go back and read from the beginning.

siring1 · 03/01/2020 19:55

From the beginning:

"an advert for a firm of solicitors specialising in representing men undergoing divorce and getting a fair deal for them. I'm absolutely gobsmacked!"

Madvixen · 03/01/2020 20:01

Of course Men should get a fair deal but this advert very strongly implies that they don't when women around the world know that they are the losers in divorces the vast majority of the time.

The whole advert is designed to rile men up and get them angry about the unfairness of divorce and the division of assets. Divorce nearly always hits the woman hardest! Unfortunately I can't find an audio of the advert online but the tone of it is very MRA.

That advert is perfectly suited to the Nick Ferrari slot!

siring1 · 03/01/2020 20:04

My bad!
I thought thw words you typed mean what they say.

Sorry!

HoneysuckIejasmine · 03/01/2020 20:07

siring I suggest you read the sentence immediately after the one you quote, which provides context and makes OP's meaning perfectly clear. Hmm

RoomR0613 · 03/01/2020 20:11

I think it is only on during the Nick Ferrari show.

I think you have to hear it to understand why it makes you want to throw things at the radio. It's the intonation on the word 'can' and the sneery, 'women are all awful and out to get your money' type undertone. It could almost be a F4J advert rather than a legal firm.

Madvixen · 03/01/2020 20:14

I didn't hear it during the Nick Ferrari show I don't think. It was during Shelagh Fogertys usual slot apparently.

But yes, it's the tone of the wording and the implication that the wife is going to take 'your savings', 'your pension' and 'your family home' away from you. It's all very 'oh men are so hard done by and women are all evil' in tone

siring1 · 03/01/2020 20:24

OK
What did the advert say. I can then make a more informed comment.

RoomR0613 · 03/01/2020 20:51

m.youtube.com/watch?v=-fFX0fgymnE

This is one of the slightly milder versions

RoomR0613 · 03/01/2020 20:58

There's another one I can't find a clip of that's basically

Cordell and Cordell - make sure you only pay as little as you have to to you ex wife in divorce. Cordell and Cordell, a partner you CAN trust.

ConfessionsOfTeenageDramaQueen · 03/01/2020 21:11

I used to work in law and have helped a family member with their divorce. Men do get a worse deal than women. The courts are biased towards women.

RoomR0613 · 03/01/2020 21:30

The courts are biased towards women

They are financially biased towards the primary carer of any children of the marriage if they have reduced their earning power to look after children.

They are biased towards the primary carer to maintain the status quota as far as possible if it is in the best interests of the children.

In both scenarios that usually tends to be women.

If men wanted to step up and be stay at home parents or work part time then the courts would probably be more inclined to feed 'biased' towards them also in the same situations.

AutumnRose1 · 03/01/2020 21:30

confessions I wonder if you remember a case from about 14 years ago

V rich man married for just over a year, woman earning c 20k tried to go for a huge amount based on the fact she’d become accustomed to a different lifestyle?

Caused a lot of conversation at work, with most of us saying eeek, don’t get married!

Ohdeariedear · 03/01/2020 21:33

It’s on Radio X too, (same company as LBC) - my DH heard it one morning and asked me if it was a spoof!
