IBH: British teen convicted of " false rape claim" in Cyprus. What now?

A British teenager has been convicted of fabricating a rape claim in Cyprus, after reporting being raped by 12 men earlier this year. Throughout reading the reports from the trial, both in the run up to the verdict, and following the verdict, it has become evident that the legal system still fails to understand the reason for "inconsistent memory recall" following trauma. Further more, the charge of false claims was steeped in misogyny, rape culture, and the teenager being coerced into signing a "confession" ten days after the original statement.

Cyprus has one of the highest rates of "classic attrition" within the EU, with reporting rates high, and conviction rates low. With the sentence due to be passed on January 7th, I'm wondering what can be done? Emails to the embassy and consulate? Campaigns outside the UK branches? I am stuck for ideas, and feel something needs to be done.

Just to let you know there's another thread on this, if you were wondering why you weren't getting many responses:

I believe her.

Looking out to see if there's a crowd-funder - one of her defence team was talking about taking it all the way to the European Court of Human Rights if necessary.

Thanks. I hadn't seen it initially, but it got bumped up not long after I made the post

They should cut her loose, she applied eye for an eye justice. The boys shamed her by posting a video without her consent, so she shamed them back by putting them in jail to feel vindicated. There are weak , or no laws at all against public exposure without consent in the country she was in. She would not get the justice she deserved if she had not done what she did.
When the ordeal is over, I wish she could use this experience to advocate for more strict laws against public exposure without consent.

Rogileiza, maybe you mean well but your comment makes me ill.

She's a teenager for God's sake. Even much older people don't scan a host country's legal code before going out on dates.

And assuming she brought the case only because she was feeling grumpy about the video after what happened, which you're presumably aware of is grossly minimizing the crimes against her.

That poor girl has been bullied and abused by the police. Talk about adding insult to injury. It is shocking.

FrothyDragon · 31/12/2019 15:40

Rogileiza, I will reiterate just three words for you.

I believe her.

Rogileiza, she didn't report it. The doctor who treated her for her injuries did. She didn't try to 'shame' anyone.
Please stop spreading lies.

What about campaigning for strict laws about a man having sex with someone without consent - oh yes - it’s called RAPE

You think all the men individually checked if she gave full consent to have sex with them? No they didn’t...
