If prostate cancer messaging can be completely clear - why can't the same be done for cervix/uterine/ovarian/breast cancer messaging?

Also - I wonder if the charity learnt from the fall out from the ‘anyone with a cervix’ debacle. There is another thread which details the long list of people stated by a prostate charity of all those who might have a prostate. My degree level biology - anatomy class - only mentioned males/men... How remiss... I expect my lecturer would now be sacked.

I have honestly yet to see a man raising money for prostate cancer let alone a group of them. Maybe this is a issue for men to organise themselves, perhaps they could do that and raise awareness the way women did rather than moan that the money or awareness isn't raised or are they waiting for women to do it for them?

My husband raised thousands before he died, but you are correct in saying that it’s not something you commonly see. I’ve never seen any other public events to raise money for men’s cancer, by men. I have to be honest and say I know my dear sweet husband decided to do this because he and we were personally affected by the fact that he was dying from a male cancer. He was the sweetest man and incredibly kind, but men don’t tend to think about male cancer until it actually affects them, personally. I think it’s like that with most men, but he never would have whined about women’s cancer getting more money, because he wasn’t a dick.

traceyracer · 30/12/2019 14:45

Diangled this website is about women, not our husbands.

missyB1 · 30/12/2019 15:02

@traceyracer well aren’t you a nasty arrogant piece of work?! Who the fuck told you that you get to dictate what people can and can’t discuss on “this website”??
Your post didn’t even make bloody sense 🙄

T0tallyFuckedUpFamily · 30/12/2019 15:09

Oh fuck off traceyracer. You should be ashamed of yourself.

RoyalCorgi · 30/12/2019 15:12

I have honestly yet to see a man raising money for prostate cancer let alone a group of them.

Isn't Movember about raising money for prostate cancer, amongst other things? It seems quite well-known and successful. In 2018, it raised $100m worldwide.

Hearhoovesthinkzebras · 30/12/2019 15:14

I’ve never seen any other public events to raise money for men’s cancer, by men.

Movember is done by men for men's cancer charities.

T0tallyFuckedUpFamily · 30/12/2019 15:16

Of course RoyalCorgi. How embarrassing of me to forget that! My husband had no hair due to the chemo,, so did a series of false beards, wig and hats. It was funny.

Hearhoovesthinkzebras · 30/12/2019 15:17

And as someone else said men die WITH prostate cancer, not FROM it. And if they think it's underfunded then that's men's problem, not feminism's.

This is just utter rubbish.

Most men in their 80s have undiagnosed prostate cancer and most of them will die with it rather than from it but a lot of younger men will die from it.

mencken · 30/12/2019 15:21

what a nasty thread. Competitive virtue signalling and ferocious hate at its worst.

sympathy to all those suffering and bereaved, whatever is between their legs.

T0tallyFuckedUpFamily · 30/12/2019 15:21

Unfortunately, the younger a man is when he develops prostate cancer, the faster it spreads, due to the higher levels of testosterone in his body.

missyB1 · 30/12/2019 15:37

I agree mencken it is a nasty thread Sad

Fraggling · 30/12/2019 15:57

The man who decided to come on to a thread about language and complain that breast cancer fundraising is more successful than prostate cancer fundraising which is not fair on men, is the one who kicked this all off.

I am not sure what his solution was to this as he's not bothered to say. To try and shame women if they donate to breast/ women's cancer I suppose.

Fraggling · 30/12/2019 15:58

He also had nothing at all to say on their topic,

Which is why messaging around male illnesses etc can be clear while women's is being watered down even if it makes it incomprehensible to lots of women.

Kilbranan · 30/12/2019 16:26

It’s worth adding that men can also get breast cancer so research and improvements in care will help them too. As others have said the men who die from their prostate cancer tend to be much younger with more aggressive disease. Most men with prostate cancer are older though and live with their disease.
Breast cancer treatments have improved probably more than any other, up to 80% curable if caught early enough. However ovarian cancer prognosis remains really poor and often youngish women. Endometrial cancer prevalence is rising rapidly as well. These cancers are less widely known about and have less funding as a result which no doubt is part of why outcomes are less good.
In summary all cancers are really shit and it’s awful for anyone to go through. Childhood cancers are one of the least well funded and outcomes are pretty bad with long term side effects for those kids who do survive Sad

mencken · 30/12/2019 17:51

how, pray, do you tell if a poster on here is male or female?

Fraggling · 30/12/2019 17:56

Because Pan is s bloke who has been on MN for years.

aliasundercover · 30/12/2019 17:58

There’s a prominent prostrate cancer campaign supported by the Premier League, and also by many individual clubs and supporters groups. You often see managers wearing a little ‘stick man’ badge when they’re being interviewed. That’s the symbol of the campaign

Fraggling · 30/12/2019 17:58

How I 'pray tell' is I've been on here for 13 years and he's been here for a very very long time as well.

HTH.

Fraggling · 30/12/2019 17:59

Pray tell indeed why so arsey?

Why not just say, why do you think Pan is a bloke. Easy, see. And not snide.

Fraggling · 30/12/2019 18:03

Alias that sounds like a good campaign, getting footballers behind it is av good move I'd think.

Hope they are successful.

I recently read about a trial of using ultrasound to test for prostate cancer in order to increase uptake by making the test "less invasive, dignified and more comfortable". Hope was, I think, to introduce screening. Each test would cost £400.

It goes without saying that anything which increases awareness and uptake of testing, for male and female cancers, is only ever going to be a good thing but it struck me that screening for breast cancer can be extremely uncomfortable or painful as well as pretty undignified but women are expected to suck it and not complain as it could save our life.

As far as I'm aware, a HCP can check for an enlarged prostate with a gloved finger? Then refer on for more testing if prostate is found to be enlarged. A lot cheaper than £400. I don't begrudge anyone comfort but it struck me than women are just expected to meekly comply to manhandling, top half naked, usually painful actual test.

Both my husband and I have had colonoscopies. His comfort was highly prioritised whereas I wasn't even offered gas and air.

Flowers to everyone affected and dealing with cancers

Hearhoovesthinkzebras · 30/12/2019 22:56

RustyParker

A digital exam is a very basic test. It certainly can't be used as a screening test, in the same way that a manual breast exam wouldn't be considered a screening test.

Potentially some cancers would be picked up.by this but not enough for it to be considered a screening method. Even the PSA blood test isn't specific or sensitive enough to reliably pick up all cases of prostate cancer, or not throw up a high rate of false positives.

Beansandcoffee · 30/12/2019 23:24

We have people come to our work place to talk about various cancers, the menopause etc. The prostate charity came in. It was all women who attended to listen to the excellent presentation. Not one male turned up. As another poster said the prostate charity is big in the football field and will attend matches etc. to raise awareness. There are also a number of charity runs for men for the prostate charity and movember is big now.
