www.theguardian.com/world/2019/dec/14/religious-discrimination-bill-what-will-australians-be-allowed-to-say-and-do-if-it-passes?CMP=share_btn_fb&fbclid=IwAR3SfoiZTBH4c_1KXtoTRspbXt1kWD1547xW7GK782LSDMTZB5wQprbdgvc

This is absolutely astonishing. Will the religious doctors let us know who they are (so we can avoid)? This seems like dangerous practice for women who may not have alternatives to go to (in time).

has the English speaking world gone mad? Trump Boris and who ever is in this country

VortexofBloggery · 15/12/2019 21:43

Scott Morrison. Although I'm not sure who's actually behind this?

Sounds like it will end up like N. Ireland when I was growing up. Job advertisements specifying the required religion of the applicant (usually protestant).

Shock gobsmacked

MangoesAreMyFavourite · 15/12/2019 23:01

Wow! Shock

Thanks for the links dancelikeemmagoldman I had forgotten scomo was evangelical. That's scary. Not as scary as having a science denier as PM while the place burns though. And... He too won in a landslide against Labor, against the odds.

Hmm... presumably this bill, if it accepted GC/gender ideology as a belief it would also allow a teacher to tell a class that transwomen are men, to allow a rape crisis clinic to only employ women who believe only women are women, for a female prison officer to say ‘no’ to searching a transwoman?

VortexofBloggery · 15/12/2019 23:23

Somehow, I can't see right-wing evangelicals sharing those freedoms with feminists? Women would be denied healthcare AND the truth.

This is not about preventing any kind of discrimination against religious people, is it. Its about discriminating against other people on the grounds that you are religious, and making out you are the victim. Its an interesting tactic, I wonder where they got the idea.

I actually like the sound of this. I think freedom of conscience is important. And, it's not just about 'christians denying women abortions', although I acknowledge that is a part of it.

I like the idea of it s we're currently living in a world where people are too frightened of losing their jobs to hold onto their beliefs and this law, at least, gives people some protection to go against the grain.

Nobody is talking about 'services' discriminating against people: that's already illegal. But, if a GP decides they don't want to 'affirm' a persons new gender identity, for instance, then they can say what they believe.

Oh, so the Guardian is a reliable source of information when its view aligns with yours? Interesting that it has been held in contempt on Mumsnet Feminism and Women’s Rights for quite some time, but not today, apparently. And I have been wanting to make the point for some time that people with religious faith are usually mocked here and regarded with disdain, but occasionally they are useful to feminists, when making the case for single sex spaces, for example. What about the poor Muslim and Orthodox Jewish women!

You want the freedom to be able to state without censure that you believe in biological sex, and that transwomen are a subset of men, but you don’t want other people to be able to state their beliefs. Sometimes it seems to me that everyone is just fighting for their view of the world to be the dominant view. Feminists are doing it just as much as transactivists

ArnoldWhatshisknickers · 16/12/2019 13:45

A lot of the provisions are things which already exist in UK legal frameworks.

For example it is legal in the UK for pharmacists to refuse to give out the morning after pill on religious grounds.

It is legal for Catholic schools (at least in Scotland) to discriminate against staff on the basis of religion.

I don't really know enough about Australia to comment on their existing position regarding religious freedoms so while I find some aspects of the list in the article unpalatable I'm a bit wary of throwing my hands up in horror without further information.

Just resurrecting this thread as I noticed this bill has reappeared in Australia.

Does anyone have any links that explain the impact of the revised bill?
