The Rapist is You

I've just discovered amazing footage of Chilean women chanting an anti-rape anthem - it points out how the patriarchal systems uphold the rape culture - police, politicians etc. It is very powerful:

The Rapist is You

So interesting to discover sister across the world fighting the same struggles and coming together to campaign.

That was very powerful OP. Thank you for sharing! Inspiring to see so many women come together.

TheNavigator · 06/12/2019 10:24

It is always interesting (and inspiring) to see the issues women across the world face and how they unite to bring them to wider attention. I thought it really chimed with discussion around rape being an act of control and oppression rather than a sex act, which is why how women dress is irrelevant - a message that we struggle to get across in this country.

Wow that really resonates with me.

I'm always shocked by the number of people who still think rape is just about attraction. If there's no consent its irrelevant whether the rapist "finds the woman attractive" or not - what does that even mean? Enough to get a boner? Enough to want to get to know them as a fellow human being? If the woman can't consent or hasn't willingly consented then what follows is obviously about power, because without the power imbalance it would not continue.

Goosebumps 😁

Thanks for sharing!

Argh! Smiley looked different in post preview. (Should have been a big smile not a grimace).

WrathofFaeKlop · 06/12/2019 17:11

Reminds me of the Icelandic football chant. Unexpected and powerful.

The rythmic beat, the dance and the different languages is a message of determined solidarity.

theflushedzebra · 06/12/2019 17:12

Amazing stuff.

Not just in Chile either - Columbia, Paris, Madrid....

WrathofFaeKlop · 06/12/2019 17:25

I am loving the pointing finger calling it out.

Women's oppression needs an anthemic chant like this right now.

AnyFucker · 06/12/2019 17:27

There was an earlier thread about this www.mumsnet.com/Talk/womens_rights/3759817-Would-anything-make-over-1-000-women-in-the-UK-coordinate-a-demonstration-against-rape-as-they-did-in-Chile-and-then-Mexico-and-then and I think one before which I couldn't find.

We need a better indexing system to stop multiple threads!

Sprinklemetinsel · 06/12/2019 18:49

On the other hand, people who have seen it before can just scroll by, while those who are seeing it for the first time can have the pleasure of sharing it. Sometimes a new thread is better than contributing to an old thread.

Dolorabelle · 06/12/2019 18:56

Gosh, that gave me goose bumps. Thank you (I think) for posting it ...

TheProdigalKittensReturn · 06/12/2019 18:59

Women all over the world have officially had enough. As frustrated as I am by all the genderist bollocks I also sense a huge feminist groundswell in the making, all over the world.

Wrath I have at times over the years taken the chance to play nirvana’s song rape me when I come across people who hum & haw over rape victims skirts or underwear or flirting or level of intoxication. I find it rams home the point no victim ever asks to be raped, which of course was Cobain’s point, and then means I can bring up that way back in the 90’s he gave interviews saying that we need to stop teaching women how not to be victims and instead go to the route of the problem and teach men not to rape. From where we are now it seems incredible that a man in the public eye, in music not in politics or social work or something that we might expect greater level of awareness, in the 90s would use his make privilege to address victim blaming in such an honest way, without the most men are nice & we can be victims too type of cop out. But this song imho drives the point home with zero wiggle room.

RubyViolet · 06/12/2019 19:36

Inspiring! Thanks for posting.

WrathofFaeKlop · 06/12/2019 19:52

VMisa
That track had passed me by, I've just had a listen.
Will check out some of Kurt's interviews too. Thanks.

VMisaMarshmallow · 06/12/2019 21:30

He wrote polly first - that’s about a real case from the POV of the rapist, it’s super dark but meant to show that his attack is nothing about attraction just power and to show there’s nothing redeemable about the rapist, not a second where he views her as a person or feels remorse or shame or even a second where he’s out of control and can’t help it, he’s very clearly in complete control of his actions the entire time and views torchuring her as fun. But listeners didn’t grasp the point (which is what the in bloom lyrics relate too) so he then wrote rape me. Which is from the POV of the victim and has her asking to be raped (because it’s impossible to listen and say no victim ever says that). Cobain (and Love too I think) gave funds primarily to charities that helped rape victims or dv victims and nirvana played a concert at some point that raised money for rape victims in Eastern Europe (I’m awful for remembering details, but Yugoslavia I think...) and it was around then he gave interviews stating this. Which stood out significantly at the time, but in hindsight it feels a lot like that was the higher point in terms of women’s rights and that we’ve gone backward since.

They will protest tomorrow in india.

This is inspiring, how simple the words are,the rapist is you.
The rapist is you.

littlbrowndog · 06/12/2019 23:26

💪 omg that’s so I don’t know what to say. Fucking brilliant

Gingerkittykat · 06/12/2019 23:51

The protest was impressive.

I also didn't know the background to the Nirvana songs, I've gone and listened to them again with this new information and it's pretty chilling.

TheNavigator · 07/12/2019 01:01

My apologies, I did not know there had previously been a post on this, sorry. It just seemed so inspirational, simple and powerful in its message - we all rape women while we work within the current structures. From my experience of the criminal 'justice' system, I would never report a rape.

Very interested in the Nirvana songs, I will check them out, thank you.

If you count back, about 13 people hadn't seen it and were moved by it! Don't apologise for posting! Mumsnet is a big place, there's room for two threads!
