I need educating - how does self ID work in other countries. If it does

Somewhere in one of these threads, there was a mention that self ID has already been introduced in several European countries. I have questions, lots of them. How does it work - do they manage to square it with women's rights and if so, how? Why is this not much mentioned? Where can I find out more?

If you can help with any of this, even just signposting me to some info, I would be v grateful.

I live in one of the Scandi countries where self -ID is law. I’m not particularly involved in feminism here, partly due to difficulties with language, but my understanding is that there are no co-ordinated GC groups anyway.

The only change I have noticed is a proliferation of mixed sex toilets, which are generally in addition to the current single sex spaces. But observation leads to the conclusion there are far more public toilets here than in the U.K. and nobody is skimping on cost.

I work with a cross dresser, but I only know he is one as he is semi-“out” on social media, so friends he trusts can see. He does not, in any way, allow it to encroach on his work space.

Given that there is greater equality here between men and women than the U.K. I suspect that if he did try to be moved into our changing room, there would be a massive outcry. Part of the reason I object to self-ID in the U.K. while living in a country where it is already law, is that sexism in the U.K. remains rife, as does entitlement culture.

That said, it’s also quite possible that there are problems, but that they are not publicised. That certainly seems to be the culture in Canada, where even extreme actions, such as the recent ball waxing case, seem to be ignored as much as possible by traditional media outlets.

Self ID erases the sex class 'woman'.
So how would any problems with self ID be reported, when its an offence to state if a perpetrator is trans?

That's really interesting. We're constantly being told this is going on with no problems. TRAs conflate self ID/GRA with the Equality Act, while ignoring that the countries which have introduced self ID have different equality frameworks.

This is an interesting question. I suspect though that real problems with changes like this will come 20 years down the line, when you have a whole generation of people who have never known anything else.

I don't have the link to hand, but I seem to recall that Malta has HUGE problems with ID fraud, exacerbated by Self ID.
Ireland has a lot of exceptions, prisons were one, but there is already a 'transwoman' in a female prison.
Mission creep......
