''Mr Farron said transgender people currently did not have equal access to marriage due to something known as the spousal veto - which means the husband or wife of someone who has changed gender must give their consent in order for the marriage to continue.''

My interpretation of this statement by Lib Dem leader Farron is that they have twisted the common understanding of the right to marriage to undermine women's rights to a marriage contract.

I don’t understand what can be seen as wrong. If I marry a man that is because I want to marry that man. If that man insisted they were actually a woman and starting dressing like a stereotype of what they think a woman is, then that’s no longer the person I married and I should be able to end that marriage easily.

If they are arguing this isn’t fair for people who are trans then what are they suggesting? A person can’t get out of a marriage even if a person changes drastically and is no longer who you want to be with.

A bit odd to post something that’s about four years old, the LD’s have also had two leaders since Farron.

I think the statement also demonstrates that they LibDems have no understanding of the risk of coercive control.

My belief is that the law should go the other way; one partner transitioning should mean automatic divorce, maintenance to be settled for any children, and a compulsory cooling off period before a same sex marriage is arranged.
It wont be popular, but this is the only way to reduce the risk of coercion.

SimonJT You may see it as odd but this is where the current LibDem policy came from. No one wants to talk about it, its been steamrollered through.
This policy changes the understanding of the ''right to marriage'', thats why its a problem.
It also changes the understanding of a marriage contract.
