Copper coil removal appointment

Mrs2018 · 20/11/2019 14:48

So I have made an appointment for later today to have my copper coil removed, I was wondering if anyone else has had one removed lately that could let me know how it went? I found mine really painful to have put in and I'm nervous 😬 I will of had this in now for 4 years. The lady on the phone said it was a removal assessment appointment so I'm unsure if it's actually being removed today 😩 I really hope it is 🤞

Having removed is nothing like having it put in. I couldn't feel the removal at all.

The last time I had a coil removed they advised that it was easier to do when you’re having a period as the cervix is already slightly open.

I had mine removed that day anyway even though it was my period and it was painful (though not for long). I developed fibroids around my cervix which led to issues with my periods for a few months after but I have no idea how common that is or how it was related, but if I was ever going to have one removed again I would make a second appointment if the advice was to do it during a particular point in my cycle.

Dangertime · 20/11/2019 18:11

Mine hurt like anything going in, but not at all to get removed. The nurse told me it's because the cervix is usually a one way street and removal is with the usual flow of traffic

keepingbees · 20/11/2019 19:23

I would think a removal assessment appointment is an appointment to discuss the removal, so I would check before you psych yourself up. I had to do the same thing for an implant removal.

Inebriati · 20/11/2019 19:31

How did it go today?
I'm another one who says that having it removed was far easier than having it fitted. My GP used the assessment to work out the best day to remove it based on my cycle.

Deliriumoftheendless · 20/11/2019 19:32

Mine was no real problem being removed (much less than insertion).

Rocaille · 20/11/2019 19:33

I hope your appointment this afternoon went ok, OP.

For what it's worth, I found having my copper coil removed swift and painless. It seems it's a lot easier to get it out than put it in. Like pp. I had mine removed while I was on my period.

My gp removed mine in September and it seemed like it just slipped out Blush

JoanLewis · 20/11/2019 19:38

Hardly felt it at all coming out (and it had been in for nearly 12 years!). It was bloody painful going in though!

Teachermaths · 20/11/2019 19:40

Mine pretty much glided out!

I thought thia thread would be about the difficulty in getting an appointment to get one removed being a feminist issue. It took me 3 months Shock

Villagegreenpreservation · 20/11/2019 19:45

Easy removal here too. Much much easier than insertion

I wanted mine gone to TTC. I liked it as contraception, easy, no hormones, always there so no need to remember pill etc. However getting it removed was so difficult. GP needed a double appointment with a GP and nurse available. Sexual health clinic had no appointments available at all after 3pm unless you went and waited. In the end I went and waited for 2 hours to get the thing out!

orangeteal · 20/11/2019 20:22

Oh please don't worry, get them to tell you to cough just as they tug. My strings wrapped around my second coil so they had to poke around and grab it, even that wasn't too bad! My first removal with strings was barely noticeable.

Imonlydoingwhatican · 20/11/2019 20:26

Hope it went well. Mine was thr oppisite to everyone else. Had no issues going in (felt nothing)
Coming out yikes, it was stuck and the dr took 4 attempts to get out, felt like i was in labour again.

Slumcat · 20/11/2019 20:37

Honest it’s so much easier coming out, I’ve removed three today and all fine, the assessment is just to ensure it’s safe i.e if you’ve had sex in the last few days and didn’t wish a pregnancy would be cautious removing as could potentially theoretically result in a pregnancy good luck

flintyminty · 20/11/2019 20:38

Hope it went ok today OP?

If nearing menopause then I would suggest topical oestrogen pessaries a few days before removal. I wish I had had this advice. I wasn't on HRT and it was excruciating Shock

Godxilla · 20/11/2019 20:47

My insertion was so painful, that I couldn't walk for a while and I was tearful ( and boy, I am usually stoic). I was told it was due to the fact I had a colposcopy recently and the scar tissue caused the difficulty. However after reading this thread, I do think there was more to it than that.

terfinginthevoid · 20/11/2019 22:44

I was a bit worried before having my last one out - it had been in ten years and I was four years post menopausal.
It slipped out easily, I didn't feel a thing.

LittleTopic · 20/11/2019 22:46

How did it go?

I had my coil taken out at the same time as my smear test. Both of those at the same time was far more preferable to having it put in!

Mrs2018 · 21/11/2019 06:19

Thank you so much everyone for your replies, well it went well and she removed it there and then, it wasn't painful as such just felt a slight tug but it came out really easily, had a bit cramping since then but again nothing painful 😊 we are now TTC so I'm excited 🤞😁

Teachermaths · 21/11/2019 07:26

@Mrs2018 Not a problem at all. I'm glad you got it out so quickly and hope you didn't have to wait long for your appointment.

Good luck with TTC.
