Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

Why do we still need feminism today?

Hello my Dd needs to do a 5-10 min GCSE talk on a subject this Thursday and had something planned but has decided to do it on the above topic. This is because the boys in her class seem to think feminists hate men and want more rights than men. Rather than equality. She would like to enlighten them!
Can anyone give a good link to some recent stats? And the main inequalities in this country particularly?

Google is a good place to start with homework rather than asking someone else to do it for you.

OhHolyJesus · 19/11/2019 17:07

Goodness me where to start!

Domestic violence
Murder figures
Rough sex defence
Porn
Sex work is work
Surrogacy and egg donation
Sex based pay gap
Single sex spaces
Maternal health
100 years since we got the votes and the many many women who are spoiling their ballot
The Women's Equality Party that centres men...

That's just to start with.
Your DD is going to have to pick an area, as 5-10 mins isn't going to cut it.

We still need feminism as we still have the patriarchy.

Key question might be, why do males feel threatened and oppressed when female people point out the inequalities female people have held through history and want to change this?

Maternity will always affect women much more than paternity affects men.

iheartspiders · 19/11/2019 18:06

I can't remember who said it or where I read it but:

Equality feels like oppression when you're used to privilege

We had the day last week where women effectively stop earning in comparison to men.

There was a book recently that showed how things are designed for men and women are an afterthought. Medicine, seatbelts etc.

Akire · 19/11/2019 18:19

Yes it’s called Invisible women by Caroline Perez, you can’t read that and think women have anything near equality given the world is designed for men and actual can be harmful for women when it’s comes to design medicine and everyday situations.

Thank you for your help the ones who have not done ‘just google/why isn’t she doing it herself’. Yes I wanted this forum’s wisdom on current topics she can then google and I can point her in the right direction. She’s changed topic at the last moment because she’s passionate about this and I am supporting her getting it done in a short timescale. Yes I agree 5-10 mins is too short!!
