I'll put the link in second post for clickiness.

I also hate "snowflake" and think it's an incredibly lazy insult that is largely used against people you don't like, without any regard for whether the person is actually being fragile or narcissistic or whatever. A few years ago the equivalent was "get over yourself". It's used by people who have no coherent or logical argument to make so they resort to insults.

I also despise the way that these insults set the generations against each other when we are all the victims of an economic system geared to the interests of a minority of very wealthy people.

UpfieldHatesWomen · 17/11/2019 14:17

It might help too if some of them didn't talk about boomers as if they all went to university on full grants and then bought a house for half a crown.
Yes, the term's being used to mean 'comfortably middle-class and of a certain age' rather than what it really means, there's no recognition that Boomers comprise people of different classes, races and sexualities. I'm sure it's easier to be black or gay today than it would have been in the Boomer's generation, for example. My parents are Boomers, their lives have been far from easy or financially stable.

'Every generation blames the one before'...

I've given myself an earworm. (And the video features part of a very lovely walk Grin)

Oh yeah, Boomers. The generation that gave you Second Wave feminism, which let's face it, was/is the best wave.

QuantumEntanglement · 17/11/2019 14:38

“OK Boomer?”

“Why, yes. Yes I am. Very OK in fact, over here from the vantage point of my mid 50s basking in the warm glow of a paid off mortgage and prospective pension (though in fairness who knows when I’ll get that given they keep moving the goalposts). Guess it sucks to be you though.”

^ Although, I probably wouldn’t^ say any of the above because I recognize I am very privileged to a generation which is literally waiting for mine to die (preferably in a greasefire in some cases) so they can inherit what little’s left (if anything) from the proceeds of our estates when our end of life geriatric nursing care bills are paid.

XXCoffeeHoneyBread · 17/11/2019 15:35

OK, label?

Never will get how that is ever going to be funny.

Given that hate speech is not possible without free speech, any defence of free speech is a form of hate speech.

This on the other hand, this needs printed out and put on billboards, buses, stickers, taxis, tv ads... Grin

SimonJT · 17/11/2019 15:38

I have a friend called Boomer, lots of personalised gifts available right now!

Tanith · 17/11/2019 15:43

Reminds me of the days when my 19 year old used to come home from infant school calling everyone who displeased him "poo-poo head".

Most of his generation grew up, of course. A small minority evidently did not.

HandsOffMyRights · 17/11/2019 15:52

Ben Elton did a great send up of the young woke and 'Boomer'.
I've had it said to me on Twitter (with the Donkey Kong meme) and I'm only 46!

To be fair, he also sent up 'snowflake'.

Glinner got a load of Boomer/ Donkey Kong memes when he spoke out about Mermaids which made me chuckle as it was about as offensive as my teenage sons going "well nah!"

Very OK in fact, over here from the vantage point of my mid 50s basking in the warm glow of a paid off mortgage and prospective pension (though in fairness who knows when I’ll get that given they keep moving the goalposts). Guess it sucks to be you though.

I'm a millenial who hates the snowflake/boomer BS but I don't think your gloating particularly gives you a moral high ground either. Yes it does suck to be in this generation for an awful lot of people, through no fault of our own. I am only on the housing ladder because DH bought a house (before we were together) about a nanosecond before the financial crisis happened. If not for this, I am almost 100% certain that we would still not own a home. I'm not sure that my kids ever will. We are so far away from paying the mortgage off it's untrue. Wages vs house prices now compared with 20, 30, 40 years ago make it obvious why. My pension might buy me a portion of fish and chips every Friday if I'm lucky. And then to top it all you imply that my generation is grabby and waiting to get our grubby hands on your cash when you pop your clogs. Nice.

QuantumEntanglement · 17/11/2019 16:30

I guess you missed the bit where I said I recognise my privilege and you totally missed the point of my post WhatsInAName. Wind your neck in. Yes, proof positive your generation can dish it out with your ‘ok boomer’ but you can’t bloody take it back can you? I’m very far from gloating. For the record I have two millennial children and two millennial stepchildren and basically what DH and I have to leave will be a major part their future financial security, though the really ‘hilarious’ thing is it won’t really go far between the 4 of them and their families. We joke about it because the alternative is to cry about it. Get over your bloody self - we know your generation is fucked and it’s largely the fault of previous generations but some of us do recognise that and are doing our damnedest to make sure you’re not completely fucked.

WhatsInAName19 · 17/11/2019 16:43

Yes, proof positive your generation can dish it out with your ‘ok boomer’ but you can’t bloody take it back can you?

I have never called anyone a boomer in my life and don't see why I should accept ageism in return. I literally said that in my very opening sentence. You sound very aggressive and unpleasant.

I’m very far from gloating but also Very OK in fact, over here from the vantage point of my mid 50s basking in the warm glow of a paid off mortgage and prospective pension Confused I mean that's basically a perfect example of gloating.

I'm afraid you're making no sense whatsoever and are full of contradictions.

Get over your bloody self - we know your generation is fucked and it’s largely the fault of previous generations but some of us do recognise that

I suppose it's nice that you recognise this, but maybe you could also recognise that I, as an individual person, have every right to be a bit pissed off about it and not told to "get over myself" by someone who is being downright objectionable, offensive and - yes - gloating.

CountFosco · 17/11/2019 16:50

I am now lost down an Andrew Doyle wormhole. Excellent. What is both hilarious and scary is how indistinguishable Titania is from the real SJW stuff we often read.

I suggest whoever came up with 'OK Boomer' should read some Shakespeare. DD2 came home from school with a Shakespearean Insult Generator, we had lots of fun with it. Far more entertaining than 'OK Boomer'.

DirtyWindow · 17/11/2019 17:07

WhatsInAName19 - very well said.

Also yy to RoyalCorgi A few years ago the equivalent was "get over yourself". It's used by people who have no coherent or logical argument to make so they resort to insults.

@QuantumEntanglement the fact that you "recognise" that the younger generation is fucked is not, in itself, something to be proud of. I'm sure you are doing all you can to help your children but maybe you could also do the rest of us a favour by being a bit more self aware when you post/speak about financial inequality between generations.

Qcng · 17/11/2019 17:11

These young Twitterazis can only retort with
"Ok boomer" or "fuck off Terf" or "fuck you feminazi" or whatever, when coming across any opinion different to their own. They can't engage with the facts of the discussion or points raised.

It's basically "Fingers are in my ears while I stick my tongue out at you and make that rude noise"

I've seen "ok groomer" as a response to boomer but I don't really get it tbh.

I have said "childish insults is all they have isn't it "shrug" "

Twitter is unfortunately full of children.

borntobequiet · 17/11/2019 17:19

Tiresome nonsense, who cares? (I was born in 1953.)

BeyondBreakingPoint · 17/11/2019 18:18

Talking of American colonialisation - the word is OKAY Hmm

BeyondBreakingPoint · 17/11/2019 18:18

(also not a boomer)

Goosefoot · 17/11/2019 19:04

Assuming people's views because of age, or because of one thing they think, is not usually a good idea.

I think snowflake and OK Boomer are somewhat different in terms of content though. The snowflake term is meant to describe a very particular behaviour or thought pattern, kind of like "helicopter parent." If someone says it and they use it about someone who is really behaving that way, it's descriptive.

Ok Boomer doesn't really seem to mean much more than "I think you are behind the times". It's the equivalent of old fogey.

RedToothBrush · 17/11/2019 19:10

Those of you at the edge of gen x and millenials look up Xennials. It's a 'micro generation' which seems to fit myself and DH much closer.

SenecaFalls · 17/11/2019 19:11

Talking of American colonialisation - the word is OKAY

Not sure of your point here. Are you saying that when y'all adopted this expression from us Americans that you changed the abbreviation into an actual word? Because most linguists appear to agree that "OK" preceded or was generally contemporary with "okay" in the US from its inception.

JoyceJeffries · 17/11/2019 19:17

Ok boomer was amusing for half a day but got old fast.

Qcng · 17/11/2019 19:39

Ok boomer suddenly started appearing on my Twitter replies, like only a couple of weeks ago.

One thread I was on (to a rainbow crew person) I was trying to speak about women's rights, it went:

ME: Something about women's rights, regarding lesbians being same sex attracted
Randomer: "Ok boomer" with pic of some lesbians, apparently proving how wrong I am
ME: I am actually a lesbian
Randomer replies: "OK boomer" with another picture of some lesbians
Me: are you going to think about the issue here?
Randomer replies: "Fuck off boomer" with another picture showing some lesbians

No thought process. No engagement.

It's fascinating to see how this retort "OK boomer" has spread so quickly, and has become so prolific. It's another thought terminating cliche.

ArnoldWhatshisknickers · 17/11/2019 19:41

According to RedToothBrushes link us Generation Xers are disaffected.

I certainly feels that way when both sides of the pointless and stupid millennial/boomer 'debate' lump me in with the other.

To hell with the lot of them. I take people as I find them and there are good bad and indifferent of every age.

JanesKettle · 17/11/2019 20:39

Literally no-one finds Gen X interesting enough to even come up with an insult, except for all Gen Xer's, who know that Gen X was indeed the best generation by virtue of our disaffected and intelligent nature :)

I identify very strongly as Gen X, and no under 40 gets to shove me in a category with my own mother!

But seriously - ageist, sexist, entirely lacking in an understanding that 'people like you, whatever you are like' have been present in every single generation, that the Boomers were full of protestors and activists, against war, against homophobia, for women's rights, for the environment. That people who use 'OK Boomer' are coasting on Boomer activism.

Now, personally, coming of age in a recession, I have my own set of resentments about Boomers - but get real, they were lucky in some ways, unlucky in others, and plenty of Boomers missed out just as plenty of non-Boomers missed out.

It's so immature, the whole thing.
