Meghan Murphy on top form

Meghan Murphy is in New Zealand where she spoke at the "Feminism 2020" event, which was at the NZ Parliament on the invitation of an MP after being deplatformed from a university - very reminiscent of We Need To Talk last year when David Davies held the meeting in Parliament after Millwall FC pulled out.

She joined Australian and New Zealand feminists such as Holly Lawford Smith and Ani O'Brien.

While she was there she did this TV interview:

The interview must be playing TRA bingo to see how many thought terminating cliches he can roll out. Meghan deals with him with her normal aplomb.

How good was she. Just awesome

The interviewer made me cringe. So glad he was going against someone like Meghan. I'd love her to appear on UK TV.

That interviewer was very hostile. Megan did a great job keeping him on topic, and not letting him rile her.

Oncewasblueandyellowtwo · 16/11/2019 12:23

Bloody hell the interviewer talking about intersex people Hmm Is that purposely done to make viewers think femenist are horrible towards intersex people? To make viewers thinks trans and intersex are the same?
But well done Meghan Star she explained about intersex conditions clearly and that it's nothing to do with trans.

TreestumpsAndTrampolines · 16/11/2019 12:27

I also think it's very important to keep bringing it back to the fact that it's nothing to do with trans status, but males. It doesn't matter if a male is trans or not, they don't belong in female spaces (where it doesn't matter if the female is trans or not)

Posie is very good at keeping that the subject at hand too.

LoafEater · 16/11/2019 12:28

She was great. Why do these idiots always bring intersex into it!? So predictable and stupid.

TheShoesa · 16/11/2019 13:07

She was awesome in that interview. All the usual cliches thrown in and Meghan Murphy dealt with them clearly and calmly.

I'd be interested to know more about the study that he quotes regarding attempted suicide in this cohort, too. I might have to send an email to Newshub.

I know that 'Being trans is not an illness' (Theresa May, Pink News awards a year or two back) BUT attempted suicide is a clear indicator of poor mental health and as such needs urgently looking into if the '>50% have considered suicide in the past year' is accurate rather than a Stonewall type figure

TheChampagneGalop · 16/11/2019 13:09

Meghan was excellent. I'm glad she just laughed when the male interviewer suggested that she as a woman has privilege in this debate. And continued that the focus should not be about her as an individual, certainly a reasonable person can see that women are discriminated against around the world.

MrGsFancyNewVagina · 16/11/2019 13:28

That was an absolute joy to watch and the comments on the Facebook site are brilliant. The woke commentators are being shown up as totally irrational. Some of the comments actually have me laughing.

MockersthefeMANist · 16/11/2019 13:33

What is it with Down Under?

In Australia, they are denying climate change even as they choke and fry, meanwhile across the Tasman they are so right on up their own arses they can see the sky out of their mouths.

CeridwenTheWitch · 16/11/2019 13:35

Meghan was so great, she's always so calm and confident. She doesn't once get annoyed with him despite him constantly trying to do 'gotchas.' I'm not sure if it's already been posted but I think it was Jane Clare Jones on twitter who pointed out they tend to have a list of gotchas they work through:

  • Why are you being mean to marginalised people
  • What about black women
  • What about intersex people
  • What about gay people
  • What about clownfish

There were more but this is all I can remember for now.

QuantumEntanglement · 16/11/2019 14:05

Newshub Nation asked representatives from several trans and rainbow organisations to engage in a debate, but no one was available

Yeah, that went without saying really. No debate dontcha know? Kudos to Newshub Nation for going ahead with the interview anyway rather than dropping MM in favour of some high profile TRA as happened to Nicola Williams at the hands of the BBC earlier this year.

MM was very measured and articulate as ever and I thought the interviewer actually did a good job; his questions hit the usual TRA bullet points - intersex, suicide, marginalised minority - but he allowed her to speak and actually seemed receptive to some of her answers.

AtrociousCircumstance · 16/11/2019 14:13

What a star she is! Thank you Meghan Star

SarahTancredi · 16/11/2019 14:18

He tried so hard to trip her up or catch her out didnt he.

Sorry mate didnt happen.

Meghan was clear, factual and right

3timeslucky · 18/11/2019 11:37

Great interview. It was like the interviewer had a list of buzzwords. I hope it was a crib sheet and not a list of his views.

Meghan rocks!

dolorsit · 18/11/2019 12:19

It is worth bearing in mind that quite often an interviewer will have a list of "stupid questions" not because it's their view but because these are the things that are part of the debate.

You quite often see it in political interviews and it allows the interviewee to state their case.

I've not watched this particular interview so it may not be the case but it is actually a good thing that the TRA questions were asked.
