Equity issues LGBT Casting Guide - LGB actors hardly mentioned

The new Guide is available as a downloadable booklet

It says it offers guidance to producers etc etc on including, casting and working with LGBT+ actors.

Yet despite the title, virtually all the content focusses on and talks about the needs of trans actors - with very little inclusion for LGB actors.

It's difficult but you may be able to download the booklet here www.equity.org.uk/getting-involved/committees/lgbtplus-committee/documents/?fbclid=IwAR2w2TQzmEQwcJ4u4gs6AXvg8v9112fzgnBeBUOSlzNmA2_dYXIyVyAD27U

No surprises there. Every media article I see about LGBT "issues" now starts with and focuses primarily on the T. LGBT bullying in schools ... T teens are the focus. Difficulties growing up LGBT in rural area ... T takes centre stage. Google a support group for teens or parents ... the defacto assumption seems to be the child is T not that old-fashioned LGB.

OT I know. Apologies.

I think Equity means it's the TTTT+ Oh And Have A Bit More T Just In Case We Haven't Been Servile Enough Guide.

Oh lordy, they recommend the equivalent of sensitivity readers. Like that's worked out well in the publishing world!

donquixotedelamancha · 14/11/2019 19:31

Word count (on phone, so not comprehensive):

Gay- 8
Lesbian- 5
Bisexual- 5
Trans- 137

Laughable isn't it?

donquixotedelamancha · 14/11/2019 19:34

This guide has been put together by the Equity LGBT+ Committee, in collaboration with All About Trans and Spotlight. It is intended to be a set of best practice guidelines for working with performers and industry professionals who identify as LGBT+.

Uncompromisingwoman · 14/11/2019 19:36

Is anyone surprised? This is why we are in this current mess.

NewNameGuy · 14/11/2019 19:41

Pretty standard ratio, donquixotedelamancha

Birdsfoottrefoil · 14/11/2019 19:47

LGB is just a prop to provide legitimacy to T.

maslinpan · 14/11/2019 19:49

All About Trans indeed.

Ereshkigal · 14/11/2019 19:55

Everything has to be.

donquixotedelamancha · 14/11/2019 19:58

Pretty standard ratio, donquixotedelamancha

Sure. I was just posting it to highlight how utterly fine that document seems.

donquixotedelamancha · 14/11/2019 20:00

Another quote:
There is currently a lack of representation of the LGBT+ community in the arts in general

Is this true in the UK? There are lots of industries where it is, but the arts?

ShesDressedInBlackAgain · 14/11/2019 20:01

Good work. I think we should do this more. It's very simple quantitative data. I saw one about stonewall the other day showing ratios of the four key words over the last five or so years and how T is now more than 50% while L is down in the single figures. Unarguable.

ShesDressedInBlackAgain · 14/11/2019 20:03

If my brushes with actors are anything to go by I'd say it's certainly gay friendly. Dunno about lesbians but, let's face it, neither do Equity.

ArabellaDoreenFig · 14/11/2019 21:11

I used to work in theatre and unsurprisingly it is very gay friendly, lesbians friendly not so much, I often assumed it was because the money and power was in the hands of the men.
I left 10 years ago and certainly back then Trans actors were a rarity.

I’m glad I don’t work in that field anymore, for my own mental health reasons and because I probably would have ended up being pushed out anyways as I have low tolerance for woke.

The more we can show the word count statistics the better because it really does show us what we need to know - support T at all costs.

Although I’m still scratching my head at how Trans issues have been incorporated into sexuality issues- when surely they are polar opposites.
