This is the third similarly themed article in about a week. www.bbc.co.uk/news/av/uk-england-nottinghamshire-50268107/sex-worker-i-need-to-work-and-this-type-of-work-suits-me
Yesterday I saw this one, where a woman used sex text lines to clear her debt. Fairly innocuous in itself, but I sense an increasing push to normalise prostitution. www.bbc.co.uk/news/av/stories-50161306/how-i-cleared-my-20k-debt

Kitten girl is one the saddest things I've seen. I found it when we were discussing "pups" and "furries" and someone wondered if there was an equivalent for women. I mentioned it but didn't link to the clip.

Is it still on the BBC site and can we complain? It's so awful. She clearly needs help and counselling.

ChuckleBuckles · 04/11/2019 14:32

@BernardBlacksWineIceLolly I got the stats from nordicmodelnow.org/2017/07/04/whats-wrong-with-prostitution/

BernardBlacksWineIceLolly · 04/11/2019 14:34

Fantastic, thanks Chuckles

I should have known it would be the brilliant Nordic Model Now

Driechdrizzle · 04/11/2019 14:54

We can definitely complain

Shesaidwhay · 04/11/2019 15:54

I’m sorry for linking to kitten girl. I did think twice about it but I found it so easily - I think there was some suggested content on my Twitter or Facebook and it was one of the next clips that was advertised but I couldn’t swear to it. I didn’t go delving for it. But I shall report my post and ask MN to remove it. I just a aghast at it - what on earth are they hoping to achieve by showing stuff like that? It’s hideously exploitative of the young woman. But yes, I’ll get them to take it down because I can see how it could be construed to not helping her.

Lumene · 04/11/2019 17:00

There is no balance in the article at all. No quotes from ex prostitutes who had a horrible time, campaigners or researchers who could give a very different picture. It’s not proper journalism.

SirVixofVixHall · 04/11/2019 17:49

They also seem to have stopped naming the journalists, unless I am missing it ?

as a veteran of BBC complaints, I suspect their answer would be that they strive for balance over time.

so i'd like to see the articles where they have laid out the reality of prostitution.

Xiaoxiong · 04/11/2019 18:33

I was at a dinner recently where someone was mindlessly spouting the whole sex workers are normal workers, sex positivity, it's a job, should be respected like any other job, make it safe and legal, pay taxes, keeps women safer, etc etc.

So it's a job like any other job, should a woman's - or a man's, shocker!! - benefits be sanctioned if they refuse to take a job as a prostitute? Should job centres be sending job seekers on training courses to be prostitutes? Allowing job fairs to recruit people as prostitutes?

It's not a job like any other job, is it. It just isn't. And no amount of sex positive propaganda can ever make it so.

UglyGlassVase · 04/11/2019 20:16

I am all for legalising prostitution the moment it their is an even split between men and women on both the demand and supply side.

How the fuck anybody can argue that being pro-prostitution isn't inherently misogynist when the sex divide is so skewed is beyond me.

TheSmallClangerWhistlesAgain · 04/11/2019 22:08

You cannot legitimise a profession where the basic health and safety of its practitioners cannot be assured. There may be a small minority of punters who would get off on women in surgical gloves and aprons, safety glasses and dust masks, but not that many. I can't imagine fat bastard punters wanting to "thrust" would tolerate the tiny young prostitutes they prefer wearing body armour either. Not to mention that there would be legally binding agreements on what can and can't be done and the risk of being sued/prosecuted if they act up.

TheSmallClangerWhistlesAgain · 04/11/2019 22:14

I'm sick of the kinksters making absolutely everything into something grim and sexual as well. Puppies and kittens are adorable and innocent, can we not just enjoy their loveliness without someone creating links between them and sexual weirdness? It's almost the same with My Little Pony cartoons.

TheProdigalKittensReturn · 04/11/2019 22:34

That kitten girl clip is straight up recruiting. Does the beeb get a percentage on every young woman who they persuade to sign up for the sex industry?

StillWeRise · 04/11/2019 23:11

www.bbc.co.uk/news/extra/VSUj7yai4n/debranding-my-body
also from the BBC, this powerful piece about prostitution

AhYesIHaveChild · 06/11/2019 09:37

"Sex work" as you put it, is not normalising prostitution, the entire industry is way more than just that. BBC is just trying to raise awareness for a risky industry full of issues. Normalising the sex industry can help women and men in it to become safer and more healthy.

CranberriesChoccy · 06/11/2019 11:33

@ UglyGlassVase

"Research published in 2015 indicated that there were approximately 72,800 sex workers in the UK; 88% were women, 6% men and 4% transgender. According to a 2009 study by TAMPEP, of all prostitutes in the UK, 41% were foreigners; however, in London this percentage was 80%."

Yes, pretty uneven balance of who is involved. I'd wager that of the 6% who are men and 4% trans, you would still find the overwhelming majority of their "clients" are men.

traceyracer · 06/11/2019 12:28

If poverty/low income is a factor which leads a lot of women into prostitution, then way not focus on that?

One thing I'm going to do is avoid voting Tories, they are the ones who wanted the benefits system revamped and changed DLA over to PIP (which is much harder to get) and of course the disaster of UC. Tories only care about the top 1% (themselves, rich bankers, top lawyers etc) they don't give a crap about Mr or Mrs Average never mind the disabled/vulnerable/low-income people.
