If the general election is in Dec, what should I email my MP?

I did email my Labour MP a few years ago and got a very polite but noncommittal letter back. Am thinking I should email him again or go meet him with my concerns. Would love to know if any of you have done this and how best to approach it? There are so many issues to talk about, I don't really know where to start, so any ideas would be really helpful, thanks.

Obviously I'm talking about the problems with self id just in case that wasn't clear!

Following a doorstep “chat”, I emailed my local Lib Dem candidate to ask his opinion on self id. He quickly responded to say “Sorry for the very slow reply, normally I'm much faster but I have to admit your question has made me have a good hard think about my own position on this issue. I have already spoken with some experts on it, and I will be speaking to more this week. Once I have I will form my own opinion on it and get back to you.

Sorry for the vague response but on an issue like this I like to have a lot of information before coming to an opinion. “

I haven't heard back yet, but have emailed again to ask him where he’s got to with his thinking. I suspect that, given he is well aware of my views, I may not get an answer.

My female labour MP thinks that TWAW and in sports women should just try harder.

I won't vote for anyone who thinks like that

Has anyone had any positive meetings with their MP?

My MP drank the koolaid Sad

I had a really positive meeting a while ago with our current Tory mp. He was totally in agreement with the GC position and said most MPs are, they are just scared of being “on the wrong side of history”. Particularly Tories- they were slow to move on homosexuality and, effectively, are scared to be caught out again and painted as bigoted.

Artesia, I had a very similar response from our Lib Dem candidate. I emailed him after a doorstep chat around the time of the European elections.
He said, " As I explained on the doorstep this was not a subject I had paid much attention to before our conversation. Indeed, I was unaware of the Scottish and UK Government consultations on the subject.
I'm sorry I have not had a chance to research the subject fully yet. I have been very busy with the election and my Council duties. Unlike MPs and MSPs I don't have a team of researchers to look into issues for me.
I have started researching the subject and will email you my thoughts once I've had a chance to consider the matter."

That email was sent on 28th May and I haven't heard a thing since.

I suspect this is the official LibDem party line on how to deal with pesky GC women asking awkward questions. They've been told to say they are researching the subject in the hope that they will avoid alienating potential voters. What a bunch of mealy mouthed tossers. But at least the LibDem candidate answered his email. I sent a list of questions to our SNP MSPs and MPs, and to the Scottish Tories and haven't had an answer from any of them.

There's a suggested email on another thread. I'll copy it here for you.

"I am writing to you to urge you to ensure that women’s sex based rights are protected in the Labour Party manifesto.
I am a loyal Labour voter and a party member.I firmly believe that a Labour government is the only chance we have for a better and fairer society.
I believe that if the Labour Party goes down the route which denies women the right to organise as a biological sex, and allows trans identifying men to self identify in to the legal status of ‘woman’ then we are guaranteed to lose the election. The vast majority of the electorate do not agree with self ID, and do not believe the rhetoric of transgender rights activists.
The tide of public opinion is also turning on the issue of trans children. Children, some very young have been allowed, even encouraged to take life limiting medications and many young people have had irreversible surgeries. In the last few years there has been an astronomical rise in the number of children identifying as trans, and presenting at NHS gender clinics.
This is an issue which will not go away, and one which the electorate are becoming increasingly aware of, especially since there is an ever increasing flow of young people regretful of their medical transition.
I will find it impossible to vote for a party whose electoral success would have a profoundly negative impact on the lives of women and children around the country.
I sincerely hope that you will be able to ensure the protections of women’s and children’s rights in the manifesto

I asked mine if he supports single sex services such as psychiatric and hospital wards. He said he did.
Previously he has said that women who want to retain single sex spaces just need re-educating, so IDK if he's joined the dots.

Redshoeblueshoe · 30/10/2019 23:56

Or if they say what they think we want to hear ?

traceyracer · 31/10/2019 00:07

I have a child with autism, so I'm interested in which party will be best supportive of that. Clearly it isn't the Tories as they only care about the top 1%. Tories don't even care about regular people never mind the disabled

Gingerkittykat · 31/10/2019 00:42

In my area it will be a very tense fight between labour and SNP. I will write to both outlining my concerns. I am completely undecided on which one to vote for right now so this could be what makes the final decision for me.

I am also expecting a lot of doorstep activity so will get myself prepared for that.

StellaFurious · 31/10/2019 15:31

Name changed as outing. My MP is David TC Davies. I emailed him a few years ago and he rang me that afternoon. We've been in sporadic but fairly regular email contact ever since and I've been paying close attention to his activity on this subject.
He's had immense abuse on this subject worse than he has ever known (and he's fairly controversial). He has taken actual steps (calling and attending meetings publicly and privately, asking questions in Parliament and more),unlike any other representative I have seen (who wont stand up, or want to try and forget about it).
I recently met him to discuss this and he had the self awareness to be quite upfront by saying that as a white middle class Tory MP, he felt he wasn't necessarily best placed to make big steps for us. But he has continued to do so. Kudos to him I think.

TemporaryPermanent · 31/10/2019 16:19

My MP is Layla Moran.

I'm considering emailing 'FLY AT ONCE, ALL IS DISCOVERED'

She didn't respond to my letter [letter! Made of paper!] about this issue but I've read her published statements in various settings about it. I understand she is friends with Sarah Brown and believes transwomen are women and transmen are men.

I'm also not a massive fan of Revoke so I'm leaning heavily towards changing my vote. Not sure I can bear to let the Tories in which is the outcome of any other choice.

LangCleg · 31/10/2019 16:56

I'm going to attempt to get written answers from all candidates in my constituency. Along the lines of:

Do you think GRA 2004 should be reformed to self ID?

Do you believe the sex exemptions in EqA 2010 are being sufficiently upheld?

Do you believe EHRC is fit for purpose?

Should it be legal to medicate children with gender issues?

Would you be prepared to vote against the party whip on these issues if elected?

In the end, the last question here is the only one that actually matters. If they won't vote against the party whip, it doesn't matter what they think or what flannel they give you.

StellaFurious · 31/10/2019 17:54

Good questions @LangCleg
