Honestly?! Is there any transphobia in sport?

So football clubs plan sign up to destroy women’s football.

BarbaraStrozzi · 26/10/2019 21:56

I'd be up for a campaign to get men's football clubs to be accepting of transwomen into their ranks. That would be a win all round - if gender non-conforming people could be accepted onto teams corresponding to their birth sex, without prejudice or harrassment (provided they're not taking performance enhancing drugs such as testosterone which would not be available to their team mates/opponents).

But I fear this is not what Stonewall means by "inclusion". I think they mean including in women's sports people with a massive physiological advantage due to male puberty, thus destroying women's sport in the process.

ErrolTheDragon · 26/10/2019 22:00

There's a massive problem with homophobia in football isn't there? It would be good if Stonewall would focus on combatting that.

Butterisbest · 26/10/2019 22:05

Stonewall seem to think it's fine and dandy to let men that identify as women to participate in women's categories.
Any objection is deemed to be transphobic.

That's true. There are currently no premiership players who feel comfortable to come out. 20 teams with a squad size of 25 for their first team line up. That's 500 players. It is statistically highly unlikely that none of them are gay, yet none of them feel comfortable to come out.

I used to play women's Sunday league. As a general rule, women's football is far more comfortable with lesbianism, but even so, some of the homophobic abuse my team mates had to put up with was terrible.

But Stonewall in its current incarnation don't seem to care about this. Hopefully the new LGB Alliance might be more interested in taking up the case.

Qcng · 26/10/2019 22:20

Stonewall have a massive misogyny problem.

OvaHere · 26/10/2019 22:32

I think there is a big issue with homophobia in male sports especially team sports. As someone else said a more targeted campaign tackling that is needed.

Probably won't happen though because it's easier to bully female athletes into giving up their sport to men which is what this campaign will end up being about.

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 26/10/2019 22:33

Won't it be great when there's an actual gay and lesbian rights organisation campaigning to end homophobia in sport?

ShesDressedInBlackAgain · 27/10/2019 18:50

Dh and I had a conversation the other day with a group of intelligent educated (leftwing) people - a number of whom were maintaining that it was entirely reasonable to think that there were no gay premier league football players because 'gay men don't tend to be interested in football'. Confused

And there was much agreement with this position until dh pointed out that even if that weren't massively homophobic elite football players generally get scouted at 7-9 years old I.e.before anyone knows they are gay and therefore need to get into musical theatre Hmm

I think stonewall needs to be tackling that sort of shit. Not trying to give away women's sport like they own it.

Well said, massive statement T 2156

Rachel McKinnon is a huge asset for their cause, with academic credentials behind her, the stances she comes out with are automatically given priority, whether those claims have any basis in science or reality or not.

How she can say with a straight face that male-born athletes don't have an advantage over female-born ones is truly astonishing. And they lap it up.

DodoPatrol · 29/10/2019 15:18

I would love to hear an interviewer say to RMcK, 'And you have a doctorate which is very relevant to the subject here, isn't it, Rachel?'

Preferably followed up by giving its full title.

Wiki:

"She completed her PhD from University of Waterloo in Philosophy in 2012, with a thesis entitled "Reasonable Assertions: On Norms of Assertion and Why You Don't Need to Know What You're Talking About".
