Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

I know that this is in Canada but it really depressed me.

Yes, it is the RMcK story again.
A reporter asks people on the street what they think about it, and I was annoyed and surprised, because there seemed to be a 50/50 split on who seemed to think it unfair thaty males competed against females, and the very worrying bit, was the younger females referring to RM as a female.
Some of the young guys seemed to think it was totally wrong, but one older woman (tan leather jacket) just sat on the fence.

Canada.

Land of the ridiculously woke

AnyOldPrion · 26/10/2019 22:12

Totally get where you’re coming from, vis-a-vis Canada. I presume the majority are wandering round in complete ignorance of what is actually happening.

I was reading about two women thrown out of a shelter in Canada because they objected to a male bodied person that was there (and one of them was expected to share a room).

The quote from the shelter was along the lines of “nothing we can do; it’s illegal for us to discriminate. I felt utterly despondent.

TerfTalk · 26/10/2019 22:15

Most of those interviewed seem quite young. I was a liberal feminist when I was their age tbf.

Qcng · 26/10/2019 22:18

These things are edited, aren't they.

80% of people approached could have said "of course RM shouldn't compete" but they'll compile the responses that fit the agenda.
I.E "oh, it's about 50-50" or even "most are in favour, look" when that's not the case.

SeaWitchly · 26/10/2019 22:19

Could it be that some interviewed are scared as being identified as a 'bigot'. I imagine if I was interviewed on camera I would also be perceived as sitting on the fence even though in private I am firmly GC feminist and outspokenly so. I work in an industry which aims to be LGBT friendly and I am very supportive of all my clients in the main. What I am not supportive of is women's rights being trampled over in blind adherence to wokedom and never saying no to the T as the most oppressed people on the planet, ever.

Mind you, Canada.
But actually Canada seem to be waking up.

Justhadathought · 26/10/2019 22:20

I don;'t agree that most of the younger women were agreeing with men competing in women's sports at all...most were not in agreement with it, and at least showed strong reservations.....there were just a couple of young women who were 'on song' about it. They'll grow up.

The older woman seemed to want to be fair and equitable - but tried to disguise any doubts she had under the 'scientific proof' umbrella - so as to absolve herself of social sin.

Of course it is unfair, and everyone in their right mind knows it.

Sport is what breaks the spell. Because sport makes it clear that men cannot become women, no matter how much they 'identify' as women; and they will always be biologically men. Biology matters.

Biology does not necessarily define total destiny, but it certainly defines large parts of it.

I think the TRAs have a tighter grip in Canada and therefore people haven’t been able to discuss the reality of the situation, the way we can. Though I know more and more Canadians are watching the strong women of the UK and NI fighting for our rights. They’ll eventually waken up.

BarbaraStrozzi · 26/10/2019 22:38

I agree with seawitchly and Qcng - we don't know how it's edited, and we also don't know what these people would be happy to say off camera (barring the two unquestioningly woke young women, most did seem at least uncomfortable - both with the obvious absurdity of the situation and with being put on the spot in front of the camera.)

The other thing to bear in mind is that Rebel Media is far right - I mean, way to the right of the Mail or Express in this country. Solidly anti-immigration, anti abortion, socially massively conservative (the sort of outfit who would give far more airtime to false accusations of rape than the stats bore out, and would be solidly anti "me too".) I would imagine most Canadians would know this too - and if I were approached by someone from that outfit, I'd be very cagey, fearing some sort of stitch up/selective editing/taking my remarks out of context in order to further their political agenda in ways I wouldn't be happy with.

Velvetcupcakes · 26/10/2019 22:41

Longtime lurker here - I live in Canada, in the city shown. Agree with pp that it's difficult to speak real opinions in front of a camera. The reporter's summary actually sounded positive to me.
We have another situation here with TRAs protesting/trying to cancel a library event with Meghan Murphy participating. Super proud of City Librarian not caving to their demands. It's become a national story.

ChipOnMyOvary · 26/10/2019 23:39

Just wondering if it might not be time to argue for elimination of the female category altogether. On the basis of...the present arguments in favour of trans inclusion. After all the end result would be the same. Apart from no female gold medals for mediocre trans.

ChipOnMyOvary · 26/10/2019 23:40

Just thinking out loud about how to illuminate the madness.

ChipOnMyOvary · 26/10/2019 23:46

I don't actually think this should happen, but if someone started arguing for it, it might focus people's minds on why we have a female category to start with?
