Neither British nor a Mum

But I'm here to show solidarity with one of the few gender-critical forums in existence. According to the Daily Mail, you can now get six months for "spreading hate" about transgender people, six YEARS if it's repeated. Is this accurate? I am horrified. Please let us know how women outside the UK can help.

No, it isn’t true. Don’t read the Daily Mail, would be my advice. But stick around here, it’s very informative.

lydiamajora · 19/10/2019 05:35

Same. This place is a frackin' sanctuary compared to the majority of other forums. As obnoxious as the deletions can be here, Mumsnet remains one of the few places where women can speak candidly about trans issues. I'm in the US and heartened by the strides British feminists are making in this arena. I only hope we can rally our sisters on this side of the pond.

ScyllaCharybdis · 19/10/2019 06:06

@FridalovesDiego - Ah okay good to know, I don't know which newspapers over there are reputable. Thanks for the tip. And I will definitely stick around, thanks!

@lydiamajora - I completely agree with you. British feminists are consistently willing to stick their necks out, even when they risk physical assault. I am determined to follow their example. This latest deplatforming of Meghan Murphy was the last straw for me.

Nicknamed as the Daily Fail here. Says it all.

BadgertheBodger · 19/10/2019 08:32

Welcome Scylla!

Definitely stick around, there are lots of women here who aren’t British, or who aren’t mums, or both Smile

I can’t think of what you can do to help particularly but the more voices we have in places like this, the more weight behind the argument. As we say here...everybody PUUUUULLLLL!

TheProdigalKittensReturn · 19/10/2019 08:43

Welcome Scylla!

(British but not a mum here. Proud auntie though.)

LangCleg · 19/10/2019 08:51

Welcome from me too, Scylla.

CaptainKirksSpikeyGhost · 19/10/2019 09:32

I don't know which newspapers over there are reputable.

None, there is not one paper without a agenda.

ErrolTheDragon · 19/10/2019 09:41

I don't know which newspapers over there are reputable.

The Times is probably the best of the bunch at the moment, but it's paywalled. Subscribers can post shareable links to a certain number of items.

Welcome. The Mail is a right wing rag and no friend of women or any of societies more vulnerable members.

They are aware however that almost none of their readers believe men can become women, so publish useful articles. They are particularly good at publishing stories about women's misdeeds alongside a photo to tell their readers what sort of woman was involved.

MagneticSingularity · 19/10/2019 14:24

Yes, OP, that about sums it up, your training in ‘Drop, Cover and Hold On’ will begin imminently!

Welcome to a haven of common sense and intelligent debate in a world where both are sadly on the decline.

ScyllaCharybdis · 19/10/2019 18:17

Hello and thank you for all the kind welcomes! I'm very glad to have found this place. I'm glad to hear this headline is false, although the fact that it seemed plausible is still scary. Looking forward to getting to know you all. :)

Hey scylla

Lots of very knowledgeable and interesting posters on here (not me!!🙄) but im sure you’ll enjoy it here

WelshMoth · 19/10/2019 19:02

I should have said Welcome
as well (or 'Croeso' in Welsh) scylla. I've been more an avid reader and occasional poster the last 5 years with various name changes to protect identity. This board and the incredible women on it have been a lifeline.

Also check out the wonderful and enigmatic Magdalen Berns on YouTube - a fierce and honest young feminist who died last month. I learnt a great deal from her you tube clip and we all miss her immensely.

VickyEadieofThigh · 19/10/2019 19:27

British, not a mum (now too old, anyway) and also bidding you welcome.

StopThePlanet · 19/10/2019 19:43

ScyllaCharybdis

Welcome!

I'm American, living in the U.S. and also not a mum/mom.

There is so much info here - these women have built quite a resource born from their brilliance, patience, logic, and commitment to the liberation of all girls/women (females).

I pop in and add my verbose perspective now and again but read/keep up with threads throughout every week. I'm glad you've joined us, it comforts me to have yet another (there are a few here) American female to learn/explore alongside especially considering the current state of the U.S. I come here also for the Brit wit, it is my cup of tea. 🤓

MoobaaMoobaa · 19/10/2019 20:09

I had a look to see which headline OP had seen. I found one from 2018 about the proposed changes, and one from 4 days ago.

www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-7577477/Now-trans-gay-hate-crime-mean-SIX-months-jail-judges-ordered-crack-down.html

www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-5707039/Sharing-hate-posts-online-lead-six-months-jail.html

Reading them, it is in response to the sudden spike in reported hate crime against Transgender people.

Which is something we have talked about on here a few times before. Any report whether genuine or not, is recorded as a report of a hate crime. We have said before this is so the percentage goes up and it looks like something needs to be done(new laws)

MoobaaMoobaa · 19/10/2019 20:28

This is were the the law is at the moment.
the Daily Mail could be finding bits(I don't know if there is anything as I've only skim read) in the first link, which is work in progress.

www.lawcom.gov.uk/project/hate-crime/

www.sentencingcouncil.org.uk/explanatory-material/magistrates-court/item/hate-crime/3-approach-to-sentencing/

report-it.org.uk/reporting_internet_hate_crime

www.app.college.police.uk/app-content/major-investigation-and-public-protection/hate-crime/

MoobaaMoobaa · 19/10/2019 20:30

so should have said, these links show us what the law is at the moment.
