Hate crime awareness week

My local police force (Devon and Cornwall Police) are running lots of ads on Facebook this week for Hate Crime Awareness. They don’t seem to be responding to any of the (mostly facetious comments) which is fair enough, I guess.

I’ve commented on every single post they’ve put up ‘please could you confirm whether the statement ‘women are people who do not have a penis’ is a hate crime?’ and it is deleted within seconds. I’ve tried this from dh’s fb page too with the same result. Wtf? Are we not even allowed to question what is and isn’t a crime any more?

Please post a link. More people need to ask.

Joisanofthedales · 16/10/2019 16:38

A link would definitively be a good idea

INeedSleepToo · 16/10/2019 16:40

m.facebook.com/DevonAndCornwallPolice/ hopefully link works

Its ridiculous isn't it?

They rush around like the keystone cops when it happens - and yet you're not even allowed to talk about it.

Which in fact means, they don't have the guts to admit a) it's not a crime, it's about hurt feelings b) this represents political partisanship on part of the police c) they know damn well the general public aren't buying it and d) they're using public time and money for this political private feelings protection at the cost of things like burglary, solving rapes.....

WeShouldOpenABar · 16/10/2019 16:55

I have reservations about all hate crime to be honest. A crime is a crime and I don't think we should be legislating for what people were possibly thinking when they commit them.

Not that you'd know it from the appalling coverage but there is no such crime as "hate".

"Hate" is a recording tool for the police and government for monitoring purposes and is also used as an aggravating factor in sentencing if a conviction for an actual crime is achieved.

But otherwise, the underlying crimes are exactly the same as they always were.

TheProdigalKittensReturn · 16/10/2019 17:10

Do the police themselves know that, though? Multiple forces certainly appear to believe that offending someone is a crime.

Joisanofthedales · 16/10/2019 17:10

I've left a comment lets see how long it's left up.

nauticant · 16/10/2019 17:14

As authoritarianism increases, governments and police forces become pretty keene on the public being kept in a state of uncertainty over what is and what isn't a crime.

INeedSleepToo · 16/10/2019 17:15

That comment has been up for longer than all of mine were put together! Maybe it’s after 5 now so they’ve clocked off.

There is a deliberate blurring on what is a hate incident and an actual crime. Hate incidents do not get dealt with, just recorded and potentially words of advice given sometimes. This has been going on for 20 years. Police should concentrating on actual crime.

AnotherLass · 16/10/2019 20:18

The issue is about crimes like "malicious communications" or "harassment". I think the latter is what they charged Miranda Yardley with

If it is decided that disagreeing with gender ID ideology constitutes "hate", then it can also constitute malice or harassment.

Even if cases like Miranda's get thrown out of court, they can put you through months or years of hell waiting for court

MarieIVanArkleStinks · 16/10/2019 20:57

I'd be interested to see whether comments to the tune of 'you're jumping on the bandwagon!' 'It happened 20 years ago, why are you only speaking out now?' 'If you "knew" about this sexual predator's behaviour and said nothing, then you're just as guilty as he is!' 'HE's innocent so SHE must be lying!' 'Shut up!' 'Be quiet!' 'Don't speak about it!' in response to #MeToo, or to any woman who has suffered the misfortune of sexual abuse, harrassment, rape, stalking, or sexual misconduct, would be classed as 'hate crime' too.

And if not, why not?

Unfortunately, it's all-too easy to arrive at the answer to that question.

INeedSleepToo · 16/10/2019 22:17

I’m amazed one of the comments is still up. One has been deleted but there is still one there.

My comments have now been deleted. Hmm. When did the police get so delicate that they delete comments which are polite and questioning.

INeedSleepToo · 17/10/2019 13:23

It’s bloody crazy

I loved Gene Hunt’s comment in Ashes to Ashes:
“Hate crime? What, as opposed to all those ‘Love you to bits’ crimes?!”
And it’s deeply disturbing that the police seem keen to pounce on any “hate crimes” except the ones against actual women.
While silencing any feminist protests or attempts to state biological facts.

m.facebook.com/DevonAndCornwallPolice/photos/a.10150903636467988/10157458513212988/?type=3&anchor_composer=false there is now a post specifically relating to transgender hate crimes. I’ve just asked the jest ion there as well. Interesting to see how long this one stays up.
