"If all of this was in the air when I was young, I would have become absolutely convinced that I was really a man"

Even bloody Paglia.
Though I assume shes coming from the RW side.

Still, the sky is blue, whoever says it.

Ooops, obviously she is coming from RW, didn't spot the name in the link at first.

ChipOnMyOvary · 14/10/2019 01:37

What an amazing woman. Dont care about her rw lw credentials

ErrolTheDragon · 14/10/2019 01:52

I don't care about 'rw/lw' but would strongly oppose some of her more extreme 'libertarian' positions especially re child sexuality and porn.

On puberty blockers though, 'Still, the sky is blue, whoever says it.' Indeed.

It’s absolute nonsense that this ISN’T a left wing issue. The left wing press have published multiple articles on how trans people don’t have access to adequate health care, and how not enough research is being done for trans health care, and yet here we have a situation where children are being given dangerous, poorly researched, and woefully inadequate healthcare and there is silence. Why the hell is medical mismanagement of LGBT people and children not front and centre of left wing news publications?

I suppose I'm just surprised to find myself agreeing with Paglia in Beietbart. Strange days. Though you are right of course, what these kids are going through transcends l/r.

nettie434 · 14/10/2019 08:19

I always disagreed with a lot of what Camille Paglia wrote but it is very important to have yet another gender non conforming person challenge the 'we're jelly babies ranging from GI Joe to Barbie' approach to gender. As is often pointed out here, these really stereotyped approaches reinforce ideas of womanhood as sitting about in a frilly dress discussing make up. I actually think they must be quite damaging if you don't conform to these stereotypes.

It is often distressing to find yourself in an argument with people when you agree with them on a lot of things, or agreeing with people who you have often thought are dangerously wrong on certain issues. It certainly leads me to reexamine my beliefs which can only be a good thing.

And I just come back to knowing - knowing - that transwomen are not women and that transmen are not men. I can't ever say that they are. Unfortunately that puts me in the outer darkness with Paglia even though I have disagreed with her in the past. I'm not going to click on Breitbart though FFS. I resent being put in a box with that bunch.

It is often distressing to find yourself in an argument with people when you agree with them on a lot of things, or agreeing with people who you have often thought are dangerously wrong on certain issues.

But that’s reality and ought not to be distressing. The expectation that it should be any other way is madness.

I’m not feeling grrreat about agreeing with Paglia on Breitbart - despite it being a completely reasonable position wherever it’s given space - but I’ll get over it.

Re L/R, there's a column in the Times today on Labour's problem with women - I started a thread with a sharetoken link if anyone is interested.
