So apparently the NHS has enough money to hire lawyers to try and force the publishers of the new book on ‘trans’ kids to send them a preview so they could vet it?! Quote below from the article.

“A law firm instructed by the Gender Identity Development Service (GIDS) wrote to the editors of 'Inventing Transgender Children and Young People', which warns that the rocketing number of youngsters now seeking to change sex is becoming a scandal.”

“An earlier letter from the clinic's lawyers at the firm DAC Beachcroft insisted the service was not trying to 'gag' the writers and staff who had been interviewed, but wanted to ensure the book contributes to the transgender 'debate' in 'a fair, accurate and positive manner'.”

I am getting to the point now that I can’t actually believe what is happening. How can an NHS department think it’s appropriate to try and censor a book FFS? And who are they to dictate what perspective a book will take, who put them in charge of what we may think or read? I’m not super articulate right now, I just can’t believe how bad things are 😡

I read on Twatter a while ago that publication was delayed. That is why. Hmm

I'm not sure why it's unbelievable, It's not the first time in history censoring of books by the state has happened.

Note tickets are still available for the event on 27 October.

There's a piece about this from the authors on another thread (sorry, can't recall which thread).

Anyone would think GIDS has something to hide.

This is why the legal campaign that's launching against GIDS by a former employee and a parent is so important.

The public arw about to see just what's happening to these children.

beagadorsrock · 14/10/2019 09:12

Why is it their remit (and they can get lawyers to agree) to decide what the 'debate' should be?

Mumfun · 14/10/2019 09:15

Dont have time to do it myself. But really there should be FOI or similar to who in GIDS authorised hire of lawyers at public expense. And should be subject to disciplinary action. This was shocking misuse of public funds!

I agree with fair and accurate, but if only positive contributions are allowed, where is the debate?

It is an expensive book, but I have been advised that you can request your library stock it, the author then gets a small financial payment each time the book is borrowed. It would be great to have this book in every library.....

What are they so afraid of.. ...

Fairness and accuracy at a guess.

DuMondeB · 14/10/2019 09:56

Great idea HappyD

ArnoldWhatshisknickers · 14/10/2019 10:00

I don't wish to rain on your parade but my service would not purchase this book due to price. We would consider it an academic text and offer to inter-borrow but we can't afford £62 books. Sorry.

AnotherLass · 14/10/2019 10:31

I don't know what the thinking is behind the pricing but I think that it is too expensive. Is the idea that university libraries will buy it? Nobody else will be able to afford to.

happydappy2 · 14/10/2019 10:35

Its worth asking yr local library to consider it-I’ll post back when I hear from mine. Agree the book is too expensive for the majority (even more of a reason for a library to stock it)

ArnoldWhatshisknickers · 14/10/2019 11:10

AnotherLass the price isn't unusual for academic texts, particularly given it is a hardback edition. It isn't aimed at the layman at that price though and while larger public library services might consider a copy many smaller ones simply don't have that kind of money.

I'm not saying this to do down Brunskell-Evans and her work which I consider hugely important. I'm saying this because I make these buying decisions as part of my job and I don't want people to be disappointed if the answer is 'no'.

SisterWendyBuckett · 14/10/2019 12:25

It is expensive, but I pre-ordered using the 20% discount code from Cambridge Scholars, which may still be available.

Speaking personally, despite the rather eye-watering price, I had to buy this book. The more truthful and expert understanding I can get about this issue the better. I've
chosen to put my resources into this, but of course it does mean there's less of my money to allocate to other GC causes for the next couple of months.

I can't stress enough how brave the contributors have been to agree to be part of such an enterprise.

It's a really important work
and a milestone in the public debate.

Hopefully it will provide other professionals with an alternative to the 'affirmation-only' pathway and allow them to engage at a deeper level with all the issues, away from the surface level myths and narratives that are being pushed.

Book arrived this morning - it looks excellent and I can't wait to get stuck in.
