Mermaids training course in my workplace

I work for a branch of a trade union and I've found out that Mermaids are running training course in my building for members who work in schools.

^This half day course is ran by Mermaids, the charity that supports children and young people with gender dysphoria.

The course will explore how to reduce the number of incidents of HBT (homophobic, biphobic and transphobic) bullying in primary and secondary schools in England through developing a knowledge of:

How to prevent HBT bullying from happening in the first place;
How to effectively respond to HBT bullying when it does occur;
How to create an inclusive school environment for LGBT pupils and families^

Sounds all very lovely and of course children should be protected from and supported with dealing with bullying but I feel it's important to get across to people that there is other support out there for gender non conforming children but I feel it's important to get across to people that there is other support out there for gender non conforming children, rather than just Mermaids and Stonewall. I have ordered some leaflets and downloaded some info from Transgender Trend and will either discreetly hand them out to attendees if I can or leave them strategically placed in reception.

Has anyone got any other suggestions as to what I can do? I do have to be reasonably careful so as not to get into trouble at work.

Not really fair, to be honest, somebrightmorning:

HR person is a poor sod of a person tasked with making this happen by Global. I'm an accidentally GC senior executive, outrank the poor soul by lightyears and they're basically just afraid to piss me the fuck off.

Which they shouldn't be, to be fair: it's not as though I'd abuse my position to bully some poor individual acting upon orders. I'm not a psychopathic bully. But they don't know that.

Now I want to see it even more :)

Did you try the Bartleby approach?

I got found out presumably by someone at work and screen shots of this thread have been shown to my boss. The training was moved to a different location and my leaflets were presumably taken despite being addressed to me and marked personal. I can only hope that they bothered to actually read them and consider that people have valid concerns about the health and well-being of gender dysphoric children. Also, the membership of this trade union is two thirds female and I would hope that their sex based rights will still be respected and defended.

Agree it is an overreach in their remit - they know nothing of homophobia, bi, and antibullying education. They are supposed to be supporting 'gender variant' children.

Pota2 · 01/11/2019 15:59

Do they know it’s you? That’s awful. How were they able to trace it to you from such limited information about who you are etc?

In the future, I would try to attend this type of training without letting on your GC views and covertly record it and then release a transcript of the training into the public domain. There’s no point challenging them in private because they will just fob you off.

realitycalling · 01/11/2019 16:00

This shows just how closely this board is monitored by some exceptionally oppressive and unpleasant people - determined to implement #nodebate.

It's too late to offer any advice but reading back it seems as if you have just expressed concerns about people being offered misleading advice by a political lobby group interfering in schools and hoped to offer alternate material. If there is any further follow up, don't engage with any discussions before seeking advice. There are lots of women on here with experience of standing up to those seeking to bully women out of our legitimate views. Flowers

That's really shit, OP. They moved the location?? Why?

Coldwatershock · 01/11/2019 23:22

I believe fair cop are asking for any screen shots of mermaids 'training' so just secretly photo and note down anything you can and send it to them, their contact details are; www.faircop.org.uk/contact

To be fair if I were a trainer about this I would refuse permission for recording sessions if the content could potentially raise emotional issues, as I would feel a duty of care to people in the session and should have control over how the content is used.

I'm so sorry you were identified op. But at least they do know now that not everyone thinks Mermaids is an appropriate training organisation.

Ameanstreakamilewide · 02/11/2019 09:34

You know you've done nothing wrong and that's what really stinks.
So bad zest to your so-called colleagues.

I'd be tempted to deny it. But I'm sure that doesn't show me in a good light though!

Ask, ask, and ask again where the anti bullying part is.
