Sorry for starting another thread on this but just looking at the nordicmodelnow suggested response for those without time but want to submit an objection to the commodification of women and children before tomorrow’s deadline ( nordicmodelnow.org/2019/08/30/how-to-respond-to-the-uk-surrogacy-consultation-in-10-easy-minutes/ )
This law seems to introduce another fundamental change; that the child legally exists before birth. I might be wrong but my understanding is at the moment the child doesn’t become a ‘legal identity’ until after birth. Yet this seems to suggest that things like visas may be applied for before birth, the rights of the baby are allocated before birth. Surely this will have much wider implications? If the baby is considered to be a separate person before birth then surely abortion must not happen? Or if a pregnant woman is ill then the rights of the baby must be considered equal to her rights and she would have to be treated accordingly?
