DD came home from school yesterday saying that some of her friends have been trying to tell her that "boys can turn into girls" and "girls can turn into boys". This has come about because there is a trans teacher at the school, and they've all been wondering why someone who is obviously male has a girl's name and wears dresses.

To her credit, she stuck her ground and said it doesn't matter what you call yourself or what you wear, if you have "boy's bits" you're a boy.

But she still had lots of questions, naturally. And confident as I am about arguing the GC case online, framing it for an 8yr old was much trickier than I thought.

Can anyone recommend an engaging book that gets across the message that stereotypes don't equal sex?

They're old enough to be classics now, but both by great writers and, maybe with a little help about the 'olden days' Grin I think would be worth a try. Age range is spot on for your DD.

Gene Kemp's The Turbulent Term of Tyke Tiler. Do NOT peek at the ending - repeat, do NOT. Completely brilliant.

I've still not read it completely Blush but Anne Fine's Bill's New Frock is another classic on the subject.

Just checked on Amazon - both in print as paper books and Bill just £2.99 for kindle.

And your DD is fab!

Yep, both these are great!

The Boy in the Dress, by David Walliams.

Something I particularly like about this one is the aspect of pretending that he is a girl, enjoying the dressing up and the deception, but not doubting at any point that he knows that he is a boy who likes dresses. And the other boys' resolution to the problem this causes.

Ah brill! Thank you!

I remember Tyke - read it myself when I was 11 so I know what you mean about the twist. Can't believe I didn't think of it myself.

And she loves David Williams but I avoided The Boy In The Dress, assuming it had the opposite message to what I have in mind. Very relieved it's anti-stereotypes.

Will get all of those. Great ideas!
