Liz Truss denies reports that she is abandoning transgender law reforms

Well that stance didn't last long did it?

Just shows the power of the trans activists and how quickly then can mobolise that she would contradict story.

By that I mean in the midst of the Brexit high octane political mud slinging, you would think this would not be worth commenting on.

Also shows that the Independent who used to do more balanced reporting have now totally signed up to the rainbow reality.

She's going to try and keep everyone happy, I mean if you can keep the trans lobby on side and avoid alienating the 'youth vote' you will.

She'll deny that she's abandoning reforms, say she cares desperately for the plight of the poor vulnerable trans community and will continue to look into the issue as a matter of importance and inclusion.

Then that's the last we'll hear of it. It's not something the average Tory voter will buy into and is essentially of little interest

RedHoodGirl · 07/10/2019 01:14

It’s been further reported in The Metro - metro.co.uk/2019/10/06/transgender-law-reforms-will-happen-insists-government-10871952/

Lolasaurous · 07/10/2019 02:26

Thought so. That Sunday Times or Mail , whatever it was, article was messy, and focused more on children. It still said adults should be able to do what they want with no barriers, which contradicted the headline and other
parts of the article.

Lolasaurous · 07/10/2019 02:28

i took the -'do what they want no barriers' to mean in regards to self-id and reform of GRC process , that self id would be happening

Lolasaurous · 07/10/2019 02:32

From that i article in OP though, hmmm, I don't know if we should lose all hope

"However, a source close to Ms Truss, who is also International Trade Secretary, told PA news agency she is committed to releasing the results of the consultation.

"The Secretary of State is committed to following through with the consultation in due course," the source told PA.

A Government Equalities Office (GEO) spokesperson said: "The Secretary of State has only recently taken on this brief and will be carefully considering all responses and the next steps. These will be announced in due course.

"It is vital that the next steps on any potential reform of the Gender Recognition Act are carefully planned, and have the right backing so they can have a positive impact on the trans community in the UK.

"We had more than 100,000 responses to our consultation and have met with 140 organisations to ensure that we have taken into account views and concerns from all sides of the debate."

Needmoresleep · 07/10/2019 05:39

She stuck her toe in the water via the Mail article, discovered it was too hot/toxic and pulled it out quickly.

The area of widest public support will be for some codes of practice on young transitioners/ROGD/Tavi, and I think that will be the initial focus. My best guess is that the rest will be put on hold, waiting for the general enthusiasm for all thing trans to burn itself out. Sad as the Government should be the ones to provide a steer on the (mis) interpretation of the equalities act.

The interim head of Stonewall does not seem to be saying much. Perhaps it is all too toxic/divisive for them as well.

CaptainKirksSpikeyGhost · 07/10/2019 09:02

Her stance hasn't changed, the mail artical was about slightly delaying, not scrapping the reform.

AlwaysTawnyOwl · 07/10/2019 09:02

My daughter is a journalist for a national newspaper. The i is considered to be a rubbish place to work and on its last legs. It doesn’t do quality journalism. The article quotes some unnamed source close to Ms Truss who could be anyone. It says she is ‘carefully considering’ and ‘in due course’ etc etc. Means nothing. Nick Duffy the I journalist who wrote this also writes for P*s news, that bastion of unbiased reporting. Ultimately this is a controversial and very unpopular measure whose supporters are clustered in London and the University towns. They don’t vote Conservative. There’s no votes in it for the Conservatives, it’s a vote loser for them.

There is no point in making a statement when they know the reforms will happen.

skql · 07/10/2019 09:21

@AlwaysTawnyOwl

i'm not good in english i cna't understand.

tory voters are in london and u town?

Kit19 · 07/10/2019 09:21

maybe they are not abandoning this the same way they are definitely going to do something about social care i.e. perpetually kick the can down the road because it is too problematic but never saying that is what they are doing

Justhadathought · 07/10/2019 09:29

perpetually kick the can down the road because it is too problematic but never saying that is what they are doing

Well, yes...same with HS2. Still dragging on and inconclusive all of these years later...The thing is the more publicity an issue garners, the more polarising and controversial it becomes, and then ultimately to difficult to implement.

Anyway self ID is not the biggest priority at present, surely, it is the routine diminishment of single sex spaces and facilities which is already happening, regardless of Self ID; and the thorny question of 'trans children'.

LangCleg · 07/10/2019 09:29

Everyone should remember that the WHO and other supra national orgs are in the process of demedicalising "transness". And the UK, even after Brexit, will still be subject to EHRC rulings - also likely to ignore women when making judgements about the poor oppressed XYs wanting stuff.

CaptainKirksSpikeyGhost · 07/10/2019 09:30

It won't be forever kicked down the road, it will come in, things will get a lot worse before they get better.

LangCleg · 07/10/2019 09:31

ECHR.

Apols.

Anyway - long grass is the best we can hope for in the current climate. We have to hold the line until the international orgs wake up too.

skql, this means that the only people who want trans reforms are in London and university towns. These people don’t vote Conservative.

The Conservative voters don’t want trans reforms.

Does that help?

Charley50 · 07/10/2019 09:42

I see they're bringing suicide into it again.

skql · 07/10/2019 09:58

@EmpressLesbianInChair

oh Blush

thanks...i have to study more ... Smile

Justhadathought · 07/10/2019 10:02

It won't be forever kicked down the road, it will come in, things will get a lot worse before they get better

...and that's because we are now starting to see the results and consequences of transgender ideology being played out in real life, for the general public. De-transitioners......trans kids......the old vic mixed sex loos....and so on. It will take years to unravel, by which time the faddish element will have passed.

EmpressLesbianInChair · 07/10/2019 10:08

thanks...i have to study more ...

You’re welcome. And your English looks pretty good so far to me!

Waterl00 · 07/10/2019 10:13

Liz Truss has not denied anything, the headline bears no resemblance to the content of the statement in which the department (not Liz) speak only of the consutation being published in due course.

Who ever wrote the headline is indulging in fake news. I mean they can believe that if they want but it's still a nonsense headline.

Ereshkigal · 07/10/2019 10:37

It's a Pink News journalist (granted he might not have written the headline). As I said to the TRA or trans ally that gleefully posted the article on another thread, it's a bit of a stretch.

andyoldlabour · 07/10/2019 10:56

This does not surprise me in the least, as we live in an age of populist politics, where so many politicians try to be all things to everyone. No policies, just shifting grains of sand in a very large desert.

TemporaryPermanent · 07/10/2019 11:04

If Stonewall aren't speaking publicly, they're lobbying privately. Lunch with Liz Truss 'to progress your freedom for adults agenda Minister'. And a side order of 'you really should meet with Mermaids, they are the reasonable experts on the paediatric side Minister.'

TheShoesa · 07/10/2019 13:54

Looking at the inews article, it states that

A Government Equalities Office (GEO) spokesperson said:

"We had more than 100,000 responses to our consultation and have met with 140 organisations to ensure that we have taken into account views and concerns from all sides of the debate."

Does anyone know who these 140 organisations were? I've never done a FOI request before, could I put one in to ask for the names of the 140 organisations? And if so, would it be addressed to the GEO. Would I just ask for a list inteh first instance (given that the request for similar from the EHRC has come back as 'sorry, it'll be too much work and too expensive)
