Moody vs York

Evening Right-Wing Funded Evangelical Bigots!

May I present the case of Moody vs. York.

twitter.com/drlouisejmoody/status/1178739616666533893

In brief, Stephanie Hayden and Adrian Harrop complained to York Philosophy dept about me back in August. The HoD claimed I was bound by social media policy. I wasn't. He knew this and IT WAS DOCUMENTED IN A MEETING IN JANUARY, but he still sent me SEVEN e-mails insisting I was. I was forced to seek representation. When I did that, the HoD removed Research Associate status from EVERYONE without giving a reason.

So:

(A) The HoD lied about me being bound by social media policy but decided to pressure me into sending near instant responses about the matter before I could meet my lawyer (I was on holiday).

(B) When it was pointed out by my lawyer that he had no case, everyone mysteriously lost their RA status.

I'm finally allowed to go public, and I wanted to anyway to get this out there before having to deal with the even bigger case.

Happy to answer any questions about what's happened!

Good for you.

Waterandlemonjuice · 01/10/2019 11:33

So hang on, you have been sanctioned by the university of York for failing to adhere to a policy which didn’t apply to you?

And this is because you called someone (who is a man) a man online?

And now it’s going to court?

And other RAs have lost their RA status because? ...no reason?

TheAlternativeTentacle · 01/10/2019 11:43

no reason?

Everyone has literally lost all their minds trying to appease people who are teflon coated because they say some magic words.

It is truly unbelievable.

morningtoncrescent62 · 01/10/2019 12:47

How did I manage to miss that wonderful clip from This Morning? And who was the wonderful woman talking, I couldn't catch her name? She did a magnificent job.

Louise, does your HoD really have the authority to revoke research associate status from everyone just like that? What have more senior people in the university had to say about it?

DrLouiseMoody · 01/10/2019 14:02

Hullo fellow bigots!

Just to say I'm reading and think you're all great. I'm just very tired after my last shift this week, so I'll give a proper reply about e everything later 🧡

littlbrowndog · 01/10/2019 14:40

Cheers mufti. It never fails to bring sunshine when I see harrop getting owned

Ereshkigal · 01/10/2019 15:04

Sonia Poulton is awesome. She also ran rings round Benjamin Butterworth from Pink News in an interview recently.

Needmoresleep · 01/10/2019 15:17

Louise, look after yourself and do what you think is right. I am in awe of the brave women (and men) who have been sticking their heads above the parapet and taking the arrows on behalf of all of us.

First and foremost though, look after yourself. And ask for help or support if you need it.

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 01/10/2019 15:18

I read it on twitter last night. God Louise’s lawyer must have been cracking their fingers and chortling as they typed their response...

AutumnCrow · 01/10/2019 15:25

Off to Twitter ...

LangCleg · 01/10/2019 17:12

So HoD preferred collective punishment to backing down?

Fucking hell.

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 01/10/2019 17:13

HoD is making a mockery of the uni and needs to have their own contract reviewed. Not for for purpose. I hope the other academics are complaining loud and hard.

DrLouiseMoody · 01/10/2019 17:18

Well, so far the response has been studious silence. I do have support from a few York academics behind the scenes, but I wouldn't wish to compromise anyone by saying much - I'm well aware it's an awkward situation for them!

I think, once again, they hope by ignoring it'll all go away. It won't. I'm putting the whole thing on my Medium account this week and a few news articles should be appearing. So all this will be the sort of stuff that comes up when people search for philosophy at York.

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 01/10/2019 17:19

Not meaning to be rude... but why do people study philosophy? My old boss was a vicar and he studied it (as did his dad and daughter - all vicars).

GCAcademic · 01/10/2019 17:38

This is disgraceful. The RA status is generally given to those who have completed their PhDs in a particular department. Given the horrific state of job market in academia, the status is somewhat helpful in providing those who have not secured employment with an institutional affiliation and access to library and electronic resources, as well as email. This at least gives them some chance of accessing the resources needed to progress their research, publish their PhD, etc. Not all departments or universities do this, but when they do, there is an unspoken acknowledgment that we owe our former PhD students this much, having taken their fees or funding for three years in full knowledge that the chance of them getting a permanent academic job is something like 5%.

To pull the rug out from a whole raft of your former students like this is utterly callous. The man is either a hard-wired misogynist, or too lazy to do his job properly.

butteryellow · 01/10/2019 17:44

Not meaning to be rude... but why do people study philosophy?

I remember thinking that when a (very immature) member of the motorbike club I was in at Uni said he was doing a philosophy degree...

But then, later, in a job, I met a couple of programmers who had philosophy degrees (rather than computer science ones), and we got talking and I started to understand.

It seemed to be more a degree in 'thinking and logic' which I actually appreciated.

I think, that if I ever went back to Uni, a philosophy degree would probably be where I headed.

Now, Language degrees.. those I'm still not really understanding (why not just find a genuinely biligual person if you're an employer, and if you're a potential employee, I'm just not sure what your aim is other than 'learn a language and culture')

Mumfun · 01/10/2019 17:46

Hear hear GC Academic. H of D handled the situation appallingly.

And you are a [star} Louise

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 01/10/2019 17:53

I read the Twitter account but was a little confused about one thing - the Facebook post that is reproduced, with the line about feminists, was that actually written by the HoD? It doesn't seem like an awfully professional thing for a senior academic to post.

RoyalCorgi · 01/10/2019 18:02

I'm putting the whole thing on my Medium account this week and a few news articles should be appearing.

Excellent. Well done, Louise. This kind of crap has to stop. Ties in with the story about Bristol too and its failure to stop a PhD student being harassed by a TRA.

nauticant · 01/10/2019 18:27

I couldn't figure out what was going on from twitter because there's a break in Louise's thread. If you read from the link below it's clearer what a fool the HoD has made of himself*:

twitter.com/drlouisejmoody/status/1178739622442131456

  • I do hope I've not misgendered the HoD.
Habbers · 01/10/2019 18:56

I think, once again, they hope by ignoring it'll all go away. It won't.

Oh my God, it could so easily have gone away. Particularly under the circumstances, given that you are not bound by their social media contract. It was a piece of piss to say oh I'm sorry she's not bound by our SM contract.

York didn't have to offer an opinion, make a judgement, or even take a stance. Just a sorry, nothing to do with us, would have sufficed. Fools. They've got no backbone, but guess what, they didn't even fucking need one.

Pota2 · 01/10/2019 21:06

God, how awful for you, Louise. Your HoD should be ashamed. He looks like a thug by the way and clearly acts like one too.

The letter from those two losers is just laughable. And who actually puts their degree after their name? Seriously? Glad you are standing up to all the bully-boys.

KatvonHostileExtremist · 01/10/2019 21:30

They punished everyone? Shame on them.

WelshMoth · 01/10/2019 22:16

Why would the HoD punish (how many?) other RA's? What's their motivation here? Bad enough that they've done it to you - why numerous RA's?
