Guardian letter about how women are going to be blindsided

I was flabbergasted to read this letter from several prominent people, many MPs, including Caroline "Non-man" Lucas. It would seem that the signatories are ever so worried about womens' rights following a possible Brexit. I agree, but how can these intelligent people not see the threats to womens' rights from the GRA, and its proposed modifications? To me, this letter amounts to an important tidemark of doublethink. Willl try to link.

Sorry my vision isnt a1. Im sure you will find it anyway.. I just had to post as I cannot believe the cognitive dissonance. They even have the gall to mention wtte that existing avenues of protection for women will be removed...leaving women more vulnerable to abuse.

Confused

So many Labour MP signatories there and Caroline Lucas is MP for Brighton. Does anyone know if there has been any response from her on the organised attack on the WPUK meeting on Monday?

Angryresister · 25/09/2019 08:25

They are right about Brexit but it is indeed ironic that such MPs have all endorsed the idea that men are women and allowed access to womens sex protected spaces, perhaps because of their souls , because they haven't seen the reality, and actually are not listening to women. Letter written in response but I doubt it will see the light of day.

Thank for flagging this OP, very helpful to be aware of as I am sure they are quite right regarding women and Brexit.

But as much as these MPs critical thinking has left the building, now they have made this small public commitment to women’s rights, we can all write to them to make these points about GRA repeal and what is a woman. Particularly to the Labour MPs to ask them to condemn the shameful harrassment at WPUK meeting at their conference but all MPs should care about free speech and women’s rights to speak freely. All MPs should care that the census is unlikely to record sex accurately any more. And so on.

You are quite right to write to the Guardian too, but emailing those MPs to say, ‘Thanks, that’s great, but’ is an opportunity too important to miss. Please do write to them if anyone is a constituent of theirs. Thanks to anyone who is able to do this.

This makes me feel so angry. Only one Labour mp (none of the signees) criticised the attack on the wpuk meeting on monday. None.

This doesn't surprise me at all because in this instance women's rights are only being used as a means to arguing against Brexit rather than being defended for their own sake.

There is also distinction between women's rights in principle from EU legislation and practical effects. Speaking for myself, I found it much harder recently to find work as a mother seeking part time or job share employment when I was competing not only with UK applicants but also a significant number of EU applicants, many of whom are childfree hence moving country, and free to work all the hours god sends. This saves employers the bother of offering p/t and job share which are far rarer in my field than they used to be even though mothers are crying out for them. But I'm sure someone will tell me I'm just a wet lettuce who should just have uprooted my kids and moved to Bulgaria where I'm equally entitled to work in exchange.

Yet Jess Philip did not accept a female constituent's request to attend the WPUK/Fairplay meeting in Westminster last year.
She was cosying up to Amnesty on that day Confused

This reminds me of both the liberals and conservatives in the US who earnestly declared that women’s rights was one good reason for invading Afghanistan.

True, Afghani women were/are still suffering under the Taliban.

On the other hand, being under US bombardment is no walk in the park.

On the geopolitical chessboard, women’s rights and women’s safety are pawns. That some of the chess players now are women doesn’t change that.

ChipOnMyOvary · 26/09/2019 02:02

Thanks for the links ChattyLion. I actually saw more evidence of this type of doublethink today during the Parliamentary debate. There were many MPs going on (correctly) about the right to state your opinion on something (Brexit) without being called names, being hounded and told to die. But when we state our opinion on Trans issues, and their impact on womens' issues, we get called names, get hounded and told to die in fires etc and those same shocked MPs don't blink an eyelid!

Reminiscent of Stella Creasy taking up the cudgels over maternity arrangements for MPs while maintaining her stance that gender critical women should shut up, sit down and be less transphobic.

There’s none so blind as those who will not see.

TheProdigalKittensReturn · 26/09/2019 02:17

This is 100% a cynical move designed to push back against Brexit (and I'd have voted Remain if I'd been in the UK at the time). That being said, hey, if you choose to nail your supposed pro woman colours to the mast then it's entirely reasonable for women to follow up and ask what you plan to do about this other massive threat to women's rights that some of you seem to be aggressively unwilling to confront.
