Hi my niece is doing a project for uni and she asked me to appeal to anyone I could about challenges facing women in banking. She has big dreams and wants to try to revolutionise the way people think and feel about women in banking. Any feedback would really help her. Thank you.

Hi. I’ve done 12 years in banking and recently moved. Is there a way to DM on here?

Claricekid1 · 21/09/2019 16:15

Hi Netters I'm recently new to this site so I'm not sure about DM (not sure i know what DM means) :( is there any way I can contact you to find out more?

I worked in banking from 1997-2003, and now work in the corporate side dealing with bankers, both men and women, at a senior level.
The challenges have not changed much, though greater lip service given to giving a shit.
I don't know how to message though to give you input? But v happy to help

Hi all, if you click on the three dots below every poster's message, you will get a list of options. PM allows you to send a Private Message to the poster. DM is shorthand for Direct Message which is another term used online for Private Message.

Thank you, NonnyMouse: I had wondered how to do that too.

I suggest she contacts Alison Rose, who has just taken over as CEO of RBS from Ross McEwan, after many years in banking. She must have a wealth (!) of stories.

I worked for a building society as a cashier in the early 90s. That was the typical role for women in that sector maybe a small management role. Then about 10 yrs later early 2000 ish I worked in the City for a spreadbetting company. Mostly men in management etc. I think the main thing was that not only is the banking sector in the City male dominated it also has class system alive and well: it's not what you know, it's who you know, ie white middle/upper class men.

I think there’s a strong culture of sexism towards women in the banking sector, there was recently a case of a female banker who successfully sued on the grounds of sexism shown towards her by the company she worked for, BNP Paribas.

www.thetimes.co.uk/article/banker-stacey-macken-belittled-by-colleagues-at-bnp-paribas-wins-4m-sexism-case-

From the opening section of the article:

A City banker who was repeatedly told “not now, Stacey” and had a witch’s hat left on her desk by drunken male colleagues has won a claim for sexual discrimination.

Stacey Macken took the French bank BNP Paribas to the Central London employment tribunal after being belittled by a boss who kept telling her “not now, Stacey” — a phrase he used so often that colleagues commented on it.

Ms Macken, who earned £120,000 a year, claimed that over a four-year period she received hundreds of thousands of pounds less than her male peers in salary and bonuses. After she complained, managers at the bank directed further unfair treatment at her.

Ms Macken used her savings and a loan to fund her three-year legal battle, claiming more than £4 million in compensation and back pay. The size of her award has yet to be determined....... Article continues....
