Project Nettie: scientists supporting biological sex

This looks like a good idea....one for the scientists and medics amongst us:

What is Project Nettie? Project Nettie is an online and regularly updated record of scientists, medics and those in related disciplines who, by signing their support for the Project Nettie statement, assert the material reality of biological sex and reject attempts to reframe it as a malleable social construct.

How can you be a part of Project Nettie? If you are a scientist, a medic or other healthcare professional, a science educator, or in another relevant field, you can sign the Project Nettie statement.

Just bumping this - the statement is straightforward biological fact and I agree completely. Don't think I qualify for signing sadly.

The last paragraph of the statement is this:

"Attempts to recast biological sex as a social construct, which then becomes a matter of chosen individual identity, are wholly ideological, scientifically inaccurate and socially irresponsible."

Bump Smile

Barracker · 21/09/2019 14:17

This just made me very happy - thanks for posting!

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 21/09/2019 14:23

That looks good, and I think has been set up by the famous Fond of Beetles?

I look forward to some point in the future where science is not demonised

TerfTalk · 21/09/2019 15:08

Bump

MockersthefeMANist · 21/09/2019 16:37

When this group is up and running, could they have a word with the Royal Society of Biology, whose website indicates they are hiding under the duvet while the lunatics take over the asylum.

MrGHardy · 21/09/2019 17:00

I guess maths/stats doesn't count as related?

Datun · 21/09/2019 20:08

Well that's fairly unequivocal.

I hope it gains hundreds and hundreds of signatures.

Datun · 21/09/2019 20:09

MrGHardy

I think academics in general can sign it, but they go into a slightly separate signatory list.

scottishbride · 21/09/2019 20:36

I will sign it! Maybe not today, maybe not tomorrow but sometime soon.....
(So as not to out myself)

EndoplasmicReticulum · 21/09/2019 20:42

Done it. I have used my real name and everything, that statement is just factual, if I can't stand up and say that I agree with that then I'd be a crap biology teacher.

roseapothecary · 21/09/2019 20:44

I qualify to sign it. Worried it could have implications at work though if it was found out that I signed, so not sure whether to risk it.

KatieAlcock · 21/09/2019 20:45

I've signed, I don't know if they will put me down as medical or associated.

2Rebecca · 21/09/2019 20:52

Signed it

DanaBarrett · 21/09/2019 20:58

@MrGHardy I guess it depends on what strain you are in, certainly the stats bods at in my department would qualify, we need definitive sex categories to determine epidemiological analysis. We deal a lot with STIs and we can’t cover up the true sex of a person to preserve feelings.

Mermoose · 22/09/2019 11:06

Excellent. Where is Ben Goldacre on there? Or is he still pretending that he doesn't know any of this is happening?

KatieAlcock · 22/09/2019 11:18

Ben Goldacre has shown quite clearly he doesn't care about women.

Ricketyswimmer · 22/09/2019 11:51

I've signed.
@roseapothecary - I am not sure what you think may be controversial?

roseapothecary · 22/09/2019 12:03

Ricketyswimmer
Facts shouldn't be controversial but unfortunately denial of biological sex in favour of gender identity is what's happening at the moment and not agreeing with this is being bigoted.

Mermoose · 22/09/2019 12:26

KatieAlcock
Ben Goldacre has shown quite clearly he doesn't care about women.

Did he say something specific, or is it that he hasn't spoken up about this?
I'd have thought that he'd be appalled by the medical side of this, more than anything.

Ricketyswimmer · 22/09/2019 12:31

Facts shouldn't be controversial but unfortunately denial of biological sex in favour of gender identity is what's happening at the moment and not agreeing with this is being bigoted.
Well, I know what you mean, but it clearly is not 'being bigoted'. I hope you feel able to sign, but understand that everyone has a different situation and has to do what they judge to be right for them.

KatieAlcock · 22/09/2019 12:51

He started well between about 2015-2017 but since then has remained suspiciously silent. Apparently he also liked one of Aimee Challenor's tweets but that's a bit too Stasi for me to care about.

Mermoose · 22/09/2019 16:49

KatieAlcock I'm hoping that there is a particular reason for his silence - maybe he's working on it from another angle or something. I just can't understand how someone who made their name debunking nonsense and bad practice in medicine can ignore the harms of the trans movement.

roseapothecary · 22/09/2019 17:38

@Ricketyswimmer
Yes I agree that it is not actually 'being bigoted' . I should have used quote marks in my post to be clearer.

TemporaryPermanent · 22/09/2019 17:51

I wonder about Ben Goldacre too. As a practising medic wasnt he a psychiatrist? I can imagine him feeling that he would lose the trust of his patients who are questioning their identity, and he has probably experienced having patients with better lives after transition.

I'd almost rather he said nothing than find him suddenly appearing as medical adviser to Mermaids or something.
