Small Acts of Rebellion

GrimDamnFanjo · 14/09/2019 11:48

I'd like to start a thread for "armchair activists" like myself who want to campaign but can't publicly for various reasons.
If we have an ongoing conversation then perhaps we can keep track of those small acts of rebellion and focus efforts?

What can we do first? Any consultations to contribute to?

I can't go public either and am very cautious so a regular name changer.
I'll be following the thread, at least to the extent that I'm reading FWR board. I recently had to reduce the time I spend here but will support whenever possible.

Small acts of rebellion:

Whenever you see a sign that says 'gender' when it means 'sex' cross it out and correct it. I carry a sharpie for this purpose.
I did something similar when I was in a doctor's waiting area recently. I was the only person there, and had to wait for twenty minutes or so, so I corrected all the survey forms.

Check out the Petitions board once a week.
www.mumsnet.com/Talk/petitions_noticeboard

Join Twitter and Spinster and get chatting to other women.

Print out some simple leaflets and leave them everywhere you go. Leave bookmarks tucked in books in the library and charity shops.

JustTurtlesAllTheWayDown · 14/09/2019 17:27

Carry stickers/leaflets wherever you go, especially when on trips, and leave them in womens toilets.
Big services off the main roads and toilets at busy train stations are good because they get a lot of traffic.
For many of us, the first indications that something was wrong was a single thing that made us realise that the trans movement wasn't what we thought it was, and look further into it.
A lot of gender critical women started as unthinking trans allies.
I also talk about it casually in real life. No big arguments or need to win anyone over.
I usually just mention that I think the trans movement has a massive sexism problem, and follow it up with the cotton ceiling or sports.

GrimDamnFanjo · 15/09/2019 14:44

@JustTurtlesAllTheWayDown where can we get stickers from?

OP posts:
Ereshkigal · 15/09/2019 14:47

Posie Parker's "Standing for Women" site has lots. Not sure I can link but easy to find online.

newtlover · 15/09/2019 14:48

what would Jane Austen think?
it is a truth universally acknowledged that a person in possession of a penis is a man, no matter if he calls himself 'a transwoman'
if you write small enough, you can write this around the handy blank border of a £10 note. An ultra fine sharpie is very good for this job, according to a woman I met in a pub once.

cwg1 · 15/09/2019 15:08

newtlover - thank you - I needed a Smile

JustTurtlesAllTheWayDown · 15/09/2019 15:35

where can we get stickers from?

You can get from the Standing For Women site. There are also a lot of places, you can order your own from if you give them a template.
Personally, I make my own with my printer and sticker paper from Amazon.

CivillyServant · 15/09/2019 16:00

I put all the leaflets from a certain charity (with a questionable approach to science and suicide statistics) in the sanitary pad bin.

Antibles · 15/09/2019 16:09

I like this thread already.

so I corrected all the survey forms Love it. I feel inspired...

If you have leftover acrylic latex paint you can let pools of it dry on plastic then write your message on it with a sharpie. Makes an easily peeled cling.

AnyOldPrion · 15/09/2019 21:27

I love this thread! Feeling inspired now. Definitely feel a stickering wave coming on....

mement0mori · 16/09/2019 16:40

This is a very good idea.

I recently noticed that my local NHS trust had inaccurately listed "gender" rather than "sex" as a protected characteristic. I emailed them to tell them to change it but I have not had a reply from them yet. I have noticed that quite a lot of the NHS trusts are replacing the word sex with gender so I am assuming they are getting advice from somewhere that this is OK. I don't know why they think it is OK to change the wording of a law. None of the other characteristics get changed.

This is Berkshire's diversity page
BerkshireHealthcare

I have noticed they are a Stonewall Diversity Champion so I am wondering if they are the ones who have advised that it is OK to tinker with the wording of a law.
StonewallDiversityChampions

Anyway if anyone would like an armchair challenge then you could look up your local NHS trust website and check that they are not conflating sex and gender and if they are send them a quick email to see if they will correct their error.

To make it even easier, I used Woman's Place template (which is for councils but adaptable)
Template

If I get a reply I will post on here :)

endofthelinefinally · 16/09/2019 17:15

This has been going on in the NHS for ages.
I have regular blood tests; all the lab forms have replaced sex with gender. As a retired HCP I think this is dangerous, given that some normal values are different, depending on sex.

MoleSmokes · 17/09/2019 01:28

EMAIL ADDRESS

If you are going to be doing lots of emailing to tell organisations to change "gender" to "sex" or correct their info on protected characteristics under the Equality Act, etc. consider getting an email address just to use for activism. Not one linked to your ISP, eg. not a btinternet one.

GMAIL ALIASES

Some email accounts, eg. Gmail, allow you to add extra info to the email address so that you can see if any companies you have emailed are spamming you, then you can easily block emails from that source.

You use a "+" sign to add the extra info BEFORE the @ sign.

Optional: You can also add "fullstops" ANYWHERE before the @ sign in a Gmail address and it does not alter the address, eg. chipbutty123 is the same as chip.butty.123

It is easy to do this on the hoof when contacting companies etc. on their websites using an online contact form.

Examples - this comes before the @ sign using Gmail:

Original email address: chipbutty123
To contact NHS Townville: chipbutty123+NHS.Townville
To contact GP Haddock: chipbutty123+GP.Haddock

When they reply to you, the replies will all arrive in your chipbutty123 Inbox but will come addressed to, eg. chipbutty123+NHS.Townville

GOOGLE ACCOUNT - YOUTUBE

If you use a Gmail address, use your Gmail account to open a YouTube account. You do not need to upload any videos.

Use it to

  • Subscribe to channels you want to promote
  • upvote or downvote videos
  • upvote or downvote comments on videos
  • post comments on videos. (Just something like, "That's great!" will be encouraging for the person who has posted the video.)
  • Every video upvote, comment and comment upvote helps to get a video "promoted" by the YouTube algorithms.
  • Even if you do not have time to watch the whole video, if it is one that you would like to promote, turn the sound down and leave the video to run to the end. The longer people watch a video the more it will get promoted by the YouTube algorithms. (If you just take a quick look then you stop the video or close the browser tab this will "downgrade" the video in the algorithms.)
  • If you are on Social Media, you could also share videos that you want to promote.
mement0mori · 25/09/2019 16:47

Ha that was easier than I expected.

I contacted Berkshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust to tell them they had misquoted the EA and they replied saying:

Hello mement0mori
Thank you very much for pointing this out. We have now amended this web page
Kind Regards

HERE is the amended page

Encouraged by my success I am going to contact St Georges next (who list "gender" and "transgender" but not "sex" as protected characteristics)

HERE is St George's page

MoleSmokes · 25/09/2019 19:56

mement0mori Congratulations! I bet most of them are just copying from something circulated, originating from the likes of Stonewall, or on another NHS site that has got it wrong so are perfectly happy to correct when given the evidence Smile

Coldwatershock · 25/09/2019 20:42

Hi. New here and loving your approach... Harrogate & District have changed the law...
'Healthcare provision: access to services are sensitive to individual needs, irrespective of age, disability, ethnic origin, gender, marital status, nationality, religion, sexual orientation, and social background'.
I am on it!

Coldwatershock · 25/09/2019 20:43

There are loads more. Thanks for the template

mement0mori · 25/09/2019 21:25

I am on it!
