Big change in Germany's prostitution law: Nordic Model gets parliamentary majority

I can't find a link right now (I'm sitting in an airport!) But I just read this Facebook post and thought I'd share some of it.

"Yesterday was so unreal. And it took me some hours to realize I am NOT dreaming. After years of fighting against windmills for the first time a parliamentary majority for the implementation of the “Nordic Model” in Germany became thinkable: The German CDU came out with a statement in favor of following the recommendation of the European Parliament, referring to corresponding “considerations of the Social Democrat Party” to do so.

I mean we are not talking about ANY country, but the country where prostitution is so deeply engrained into the national identity. And that’s not all: How weird it feels, when they quote your feminist stances and make it their own. When they make clear they understood that there is a wrong distinction between human trafficking/forced prostitution on the one hand and so called “self-determined voluntary” prostitution on the other – and say they want a better society for all… "

I think it's pretty huge! Perhaps someone else can find links, too fiddly on phone!

I also think there must be some sort of bat signal to pimp-and-punter central. Whenever there's a thread about the Nordic model, a brand new poster pops up from nowhere to lie about how prostitution is more dangerous under the Nordic model.

Regardless of the fact that actual data shows prostitution increases, trafficking sky rockets and (from the point of view of the prostitutes themselves) prices plummet. There are parts of Hamburg where the going rate for a BJ is less than the price of a big Mac. And all those much vaunted health care and employment benefits? Non-existent. Brothel owners don't take women on as employees (to whom they'd have to give work place protections). They rent rooms to "independent contractors."

Under what system?

Sorry missed a bit - skyrockets under complete decrim along the lines of Germany.

DoctorAllcome · 11/09/2019 15:04

@BarbaraStrozzi
I think you meant legalization not decriminalization because that is what Germany did.

I finally got a media link. It's in German but hopefully Google can translate adequately.

Thanks for the link Lamaha - Google translate was a bit idiosyncratic but the gist was clear. A long way off legislation still, but at least a mainstream political party holding up its hands and saying "legalisation wasn't a success" is huge progress.

CharlieParley · 12/09/2019 14:42

Thanks Lamahaha good to see confirmation that the German conservatives have indeed now come out in support of the Nordic Model as as an official party position. With the German labour party and a whole range of other, smaller parties already in favour, this could make a real difference.
