Unisex toilets in primary

Hi.

Lurker and GC feminist here.

My child came home yesterday and told me that the toilets for ks2 are now unisex.
No parental input nor consultation. It's done. (This is a VA school btw)
The HT says because the cubicles are separate its fine.
There is 1 cubicle with a sanpro bin in and the girls "know which one it is"
I don't think its fine.
I'm really really angry.
Can you tell me if aibu??
I have actually worked in schools and seen inappropriate sexualised behaviour in toilets.
Some of the year 6 boys are taller than me (at 5'.5") and some of the year 3 girls are tiny.
Can I complain, and who to?
Thank you.

Yanbu
I started my period at 10 and was ashamed as is- didn't want anyone to know!
No privacy for girls.
If it were infants it would be different but not older.

I thought it was law that you had to have single sex toilets in KS2 . My DDs school have single sex which I’m very glad about (in KS1 they were unisex). What is a VA school by the way?

Voluntary aided - faith school.

I started at 10 too

My kids school changed the official signs on the doors to unisex ones. But the kids carry on segregating themselves, interestingly - and reassuringly.

The cubicles are floor to ceiling so private in that sense.

But the queues for the toilets and the wash area are unisex.

It seems amazing to me that there was no consultatuon on this.

It's only a couple of years since a child held down another and simulated anal sex.

The child who was assaulted had sn.

I'm also confused as to how the teachers will always be around to oversee the area??

Is it an open space as such with individual cubicles, or is it a separate room with individual cubicles?

Hoooo · 30/08/2019 21:49

Afaik seperate cubicles, 1 with a sanpro bin, and then an area where they wash hands and dry them etc

Our toilets are unisex but they're open on a corridor, with individual cubicles, which I think is absolutely fine. I've not known any traditional toilet blocks which aren't open to be unisex.

Hoooo · 30/08/2019 21:55

I think it's crap.
I think it's another way that girls are taught they dont deserve safe single sex spaces.

sauvignon

How is the area passively viewed by teachers?

They don’t meet building regulations unless the hand washing facilities are inside the room like a disabled toilet. They must be fully enclosed rooms with floor to ceiling doors and walls and washing facilities contained within.

Complain on those grounds.

Hoooo · 30/08/2019 22:03

Apparently looking at EDSec website its ok if you have a trough??

DS’s school toilets are unisex but they are individual rooms with hand basins and driers in each one.
Whereas I think you are talking about what we have in one building at work, which is floor to ceiling cubicles and shared hand-washing space - although there are also single sex toilets on different floors.

SoloNow · 30/08/2019 22:09

What is a trough?!?

Hoooo · 30/08/2019 22:31

Sounds similar solo

A trough....one long metal sink, no plugs,

There is a secondary school I go to (for a weekend activity for my kids) and it is a newish refurbished school. All the toilets there are unisex. Off the corridor , so openview access to the outside of the toilets , floor to ceiling cubicles, and a long metal trough sink outside. So - I suppose the thought is no bullying as everyone is visible in the hand washing area, but there is absolutely no privacy. I think they are horrible when I use them and would have hated them if i was at school then. My DS school is very old, and still have separate boys and girls.

Ask them if they carried out a risk assessment.
