Quite fast American distance runner wants to compete as a woman

hello - man here:) regularish reader, very occasional poster

I peak-transed a while back. Sport tipped me other the edge. Back in the day I was an above average club runner. For context at my best the times I ran for every distance from 800m to the marathon would comfortably qualify me for major events - had I been a woman!

I'm aware of the whole McKinnon saga and Hubbard and others... but have sensed that it would take more than that to really create a stir. What would happen if younger bloke who is actually quite good and still improving claims to be a woman and wants to compete as a woman.

Well, I think it may have happened, in America.

The athlete in question appears to be Montana athlete June Eastwood. She competed on the men's track team for 3 years as Jonathan Eastwood, amassing PBs 1:55.23, 3:50.19 and 14:38.80.

Those times at 800 and 1500 are better than the US records and not far off the world records. Similarly the 5000m is just outside the US (women's record).

It will be 'interesting' to see how this develops.

I hadn't seen this. I talk about this quite a lot with my 16 year old DS who is very GC like me. We would love Usain Bolt (for example), now retired as a man, to wear a nice swishy blond wig and compete as Ursula in the next Olympics, just to show the madness of it all.

happydappy2 · 26/08/2019 13:39

June Eastwood-one to watch for sure....when will the madness end?

mcduffy · 26/08/2019 13:50

Sadhope it does get us to widespread revulsion quicker. What's the point of them competing?! I've managed to peak a colleague I think this week by comparing it to competing in a toddler egg and spoon race... In your face, three year old, i win!
NC for this bit!
My DH is slower than this athlete but in the top 1000 5k runners in the country. At last check only around 20 women were faster than him. Wonder if he could be the Zuby of the running world for us... he has offered!

HedgehogsRock · 26/08/2019 14:43

How far will this have to go, before it is stopped by common sense and fairness?

More to the point, what will it take to reach that point - all female competitors refusing to participate against cheats? Or possibly broken bones by the score, serious injuries, brain damage or even death?

The latter is unlikely to have any effect as women have already been proven to be disposable or collateral damage in the fight to retain our single sex spaces, as no matter how many times predators take advantage of being able to ID as women and no matter how many children and women are abused or subjected to voyeurism, there doesn't appear to be anyone in power who gives a flying fuck about us, our rights, safety, privacy and dignity.

The few politicians who are brave enough to stand up and be counted on this, are attacked viciously from all sides and are struggling to gain support even from those politicians and policy-makers who agree but are silent on the matter for whatever reason. Can they not see that this is what they need to stand up to support? What's the point in being a politician or policy-maker if you haven't the integrity or bottle to do what's right?

There are so many sporting and other organisations who are falling by the wayside here, it's unbefuckinglievable. Wake up, you fuckwits!

(Sorry, not sorry, for the rant!)

lady69 · 26/08/2019 14:46

Tweet to Dame Kelly Holmes...

HedgehogsRock · 26/08/2019 14:59

Damn, I forgot the option of the loss of all titles, podium positions, prize money, bursaries, sponsorship etc, when they are taken by males. Not that it appears as though that's particularly important either.

And of course, the self-exclusion from contact sports by women and girls, who are unable to compete fairly and safely against those participants with male bodies.

Why do the sports governing bodies not see this as lunacy? Are they so full of Wokies that they really don't see the bleedin' obvious or are they all too afraid of blurting out that the Emperor Has No Clothes?

(Yet another rant!)

MrGHardy · 26/08/2019 15:02

Will be very interesting to see. More because all the other men have tended to be mediocre as men, but strong as 'women'. This is someone who was already strong as a man.

Durgasarrow · 26/08/2019 15:06

Oh my gosh, she's so brave and stunning. I'm just sitting here weeping as I read her story about pioneering and overcoming and internally struggling. She must be the only racer on the track who ever struggled or overcame anything, because if they did, wouldn't they have stories, too? No, they're just things to struggle with until they are overpowered. They are part of her story, just objects to be mastered.

Propertyfaux · 26/08/2019 15:12

The problem is, June doesn’t have to run Jonathan’s times. June just has to be slightly in front. Then proving the hormones are impacting performance and creating the supposed level playing.

FWRLurker · 26/08/2019 16:36

The frustrating thing is that all the misogynists of the world are laughing their asses off saying look now feminists you got what you wanted. That men are better women than bio ones. We need better visibility of actual feminism in the press - you know the kind of feminism that stands up for female humans not male ones.

TRA = MRA

Indeed FWRLurker I assume it wasn't a woman who made this comment on the thread.

The interesting thing is that Eastwood is a middle distance runner.

So will be up against Semenya, Niyonsaba and Wambui - all biological males who compete in women's middle distance running.

These males won gold, silver and bronze at the 800m women's event at the Rio Olympics.

I foresee that those runners will be complaining about how unfair it all is when Eastwood joins the fray.

FannyCann · 26/08/2019 17:04

Yes. Whilst being sorry for all the women who are going to miss out on medals it is certainly going to be interesting watching this one play out.

NotBadConsidering · 26/08/2019 22:21

I wonder if this is a deliberate attempt by someone to highlight the ridiculousness of it all. At least I hope it is...
