People tattoo their dogs now. I don't mean to make this a feminist issue but does the slow drip drip of women's boundaries create a world where an animals right to consent matters less? Does it make me a SWERF that I wonder whether the fact that a porn star tattoos her dog means she does not understand boundaries or appropriacy or basic morality?

I don't know. I think most dog lovers would abhor this. I'd even say overall I see a tendency to elevate the rights of pet animals.

Although.... the way that presents is often people treating pets like people, sending them to spas, and stuff like that. In many cases in ways that are probably not that good for, or even enjoyable for the pet. So perhaps this is an example of that sort of thing.

There are legitimate reasons to tattoo animals, 'for cosmetic reasons' isn't one of them.
(Tattoos can be used for identification/security, and to prevent serious eye problems in horses.)

Gingerkittykat · 21/08/2019 18:51

I'm not sure if it is a porn star thing, a quick google brought up a few images. I'm wondering what kind of tattooist would actually tattoo a dog though. It's bound to be agonising and they must either sedate or use force to keep them still.

I imagine (hope) that sedation is used. This is grim. Animal rights and animal welfare is a subject much closer to my heart than much of what is discussed on here. Women can speak up for themselves; animals can't.

GirlDownUnder · 22/08/2019 00:53

On boundaries - the push has been to queer society for some time. Maybe the whole fur babies, anthropomorphising animals, leading to dying and tattooing is part of that?

Gingerkittykat that’s horrible Shock Poor dog.
I really hope this isn’t a ‘thing’ / doesn’t start a new trend.

PantsyMcPantsface · 22/08/2019 07:52

Just pointing out that some dogs have been tattooed for a long time - racing greyhounds have tattoos inside their ears. No one really cared because they're not cute and fluffy (well I think they're cute in a leggy and adorkable way).

DuMondeB · 22/08/2019 08:05

My rescue Greyhound has tattooed ears (although they are made with a stamp set rather than a tattoo machine). I actually have his reg numbers tattooed on me so we have matching tattoos (although wouldn’t dream of tattooing an animal personally).

I’ve mentioned before that I have pretty much a completely tattooed body, made over a 20 year period. I know pretty much everyone who’s anyone in the U.K. tattoo world and no one decent would do this.

It’ll be done my some unregistered, untrained scrote in his back bedroom.

In some US places they tattoo dogs when unconscious for neutering - these are done to indicate the dog cannot be bred from, to make it less appealing to thieves. Those tattoos are done by veterinary staff, not tattooers.

Anyone who wants this done to their dog for their own entertainment or is willing to do it to a dog deserves to be prosecuted for animal cruelty.

Some years ago there was massive outcry over Wim Delvoye’s tattooed pigs. And rightly so.

Tattoos are for consenting adults only.

HandsOffMyRights · 22/08/2019 08:12

This is low.
Animal abusers should be prosecuted.

GirlDownUnder · 22/08/2019 08:20

I heart Greyhounds, and am looking at fostering. Tattoos or stamps for ID are mostly understandable, and not what’s being talked about here.

DuMondeB that’s interesting re marking an animal to make it less of a target for thieves / breeding. That also kinda makes sense and if it’s done by a vet while the dog is under sedation then it more practical than pretty.

Tattooing for ‘cosmetic’ reasons is selfish behaviour by owners.

koshkat · 22/08/2019 09:53

Animal abuse. Heartbreaking. Disgusting on so many levels. This has upset me so much.

DuMondeB · 22/08/2019 10:07

Greyhounds are marvellous - we have a giant one (35kg, bred for sprint distances but never ran a professional track, thankfully dumped rather than destroyed) who is more like a kitten than a dog. He’s a classic 35mph couch potato.

We also have a rescue lurcher who is a bit more complicated (badly abused and HATES men) but just as loved.

Both are Irish, adopted via the marvellous Kent Greyhound Rescue.

I’d apologise for the digression but I bloody love my hounds and will talk about them endlessly if given the opportunity!

Kuponut · 22/08/2019 11:35

I love greyhounds - have my dopey bugger currently upside down on the sofa. Irish dog = tattoos on both ears which I can't help feeling must have hurt like buggery considering it's a breed who'll scream the house down if they stub their toe!

DuMondeB · 22/08/2019 13:38

I looked up the ear tattoo stamper-gadget because of this thread. Not linking to the video because, yuk. Here’s a screen shot.

Apparently, some US vets ‘tattoo’ a small line on the belly (using a scalpel and special veterinarian grade ink when spaying - in many breeds this only becomes visible when shaved, but it’s there to show future vets that this dog has already done, so no need to open them up again!

I wouldn't consider id tattoos the same at all. They tend to be small and they have a real purpose.

MargueritaBlue · 22/08/2019 17:39

I'm a cat person but I love greyhounds. If I ever get a dog it will be a greyhound- they are so elegant.

DivaDroid · 22/08/2019 17:43

Sorry for derail, but this is my tattooed hound. Elegant is not a word I'd use to describe greyhounds WinkGrin

Kuponut · 22/08/2019 18:16

Vintage greyhound there Diva comfort before anything else. They never struck me as elegant either - it's more like frantically throwing legs around at high speed praying they go forward cos otherwise they're going to land on that pointy nose or get their legs in a knot.
