Summary of the book here, it’s available on Amazon UK: www.binary.org.au/transgender_book_describes_oral_sex_by_a_6_year_old

It’s Queer Theory in action, the dilution of acceptable boundaries.

We haven't lost. We're just getting started.

The only weapons they ever had was stealth and an instant and vociferous appeal to women's socialisation to shut up and be nice, or else.

Both those weapons are now useless.

BoxOfBabyCheeses · 19/08/2019 09:45

I have just emailed the three libraries in my town to ask if they stock the book. I can't believe that that was published, deemed suitable for children and has even been chosen by Stonewall as an "Honour Book".

andyoldlabour · 19/08/2019 10:36

"been chosen by Stonewall as an "Honour Book"."

Queer theory - Stonewall - - - PIE?

Yeahnahyeah · 19/08/2019 10:50

Ok, thanks for the heartening replies 💪.
It's so fecken complex!! (yet simple).

Clarity. Logic. Pragmatism. Reality.

chosen by Stonewall as an "Honour Book"

Of course it has, we all know what stonewall stand for these days.

MrsSnippyPants · 19/08/2019 11:29

Just found that there are six copies of this book available in our region. have emailed them. Sigh.......

Thanks OP

PerkingFaintly · 19/08/2019 11:59

Shock There is no part of this that is not WTF!

Well done, Rocaille, in getting them to at least recategorise it.

I think pointing out explicitly the problems with the content might be better than forwarding the link in the OP, though.

Take a look at the rest of that site. Apparently it exists to promote gender, and doesn't know the difference between gender and sex.Hmm Doesn't look like it's gender critical – more like the opposite.

www.binary.org.au
OUR DIFFERENCES MAKE US STRONGER
Join the fight against the de-gendering of our society. Celebrate the true diversity of men and women.

Binary as an organisation is concerned with the role that gender plays in our society. We affirm the fact that gender is binary.

Male and Female.

Our organisation aims to promote and celebrate the inherent differences between boys and girls, men and women. We uphold the biological assertion that there are two complementary genders.

Binary exists to challenge the aggressive agenda to de-gender our society in the areas of education, health, military, business, politics and the law.

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 19/08/2019 12:17

Just checked my region, several copies, most in secondary school libraries.

I want to write and make the library service aware of the content and why it is so horribly inappropriate, but I don't want to come across as a pearl clutching harridan. Plus I am dead against the banning of books.

Really not sure how to go about this,.or whether I even should.

CaptainKirksSpookyghost · 19/08/2019 12:21

What matters more, your belief about this books subject matter or what other people think of you for holding a belief?

Plus I am dead against the banning of books.

Not one person has said this needs to be banned, just that it is not child friendly.

Fraggling · 19/08/2019 12:25

Our borough has 8 copies in teen non fiction category.

Fraggling · 19/08/2019 12:50

Binary the org sounds like a right wing / religious type idea

Women and men different but equal and should stick to their natural spheres type idea.

So linking them in a complaint won't be a good idea probably.

I might get the book and have a read.

These type of sites have been known to bend the truth. In the face of it though. Having story of 6yo as 'sexually mature' and performing sex acts, if presented with no challenge / context / info to say that well actually a6yo can't be 'sexually Mature', is incredibly irresponsible.

WelshMoth · 19/08/2019 12:54

Marking place to research this. Words fail me.

ChattyLion · 19/08/2019 13:22

My local authority library doesn’t bring anything up for this book on the library catalogue. Don’t know if my woke local schools will be putting it in their own libraries though. Especially if Stonewall is supporting it in some way? Hmm

The book is not going down that well on goodreads:
www.goodreads.com/book/show/18166920-beyond-magenta

What do people think- Could there be a supplementary, positive campaign from this to ask our local libraries to stock gender critical books?

What are some good titles to recommend? Sheila Jeffries etc for theory? This books is compilation of personal interviews with young trans-identifying people Are there any books like that of interviews with GC people (if not... someone on here should write it!) also are there any similar books interviewing young people who have not adopted a trans identity as an approach to dealing with their dysphoria or discomfort, or taking to parents about their experiences, or Health care professionals about theirs of supporting children and young people through these issues? Also, crucially, interviews with young people who have de-transitioned which always seems to be the missing voice in these discussions with young people.

Again, if these books don’t exist, someone should write them!

I want to email my library now to carry some useful reads that are already in existence- like the Transgender trend schools pack- but that’s a PDF not a physical book, so I don’t know if that works. Ditto various blogs with detransitioned people that have been highlighted on FWR. Any librarians about who could tell me if or how that could work?

(Sorry if this rightly needs a separate thread starting.. happy to do so)

ChattyLion · 19/08/2019 13:23

Ugh so many typos in that, sorry!

Goosefoot · 19/08/2019 13:47

My library seems to have this, in the young adult section. Someone has copied the review linked to at the beginning of the thread to the catalogue page.

I've worked in libraries myself, I would not be at all surprised if no one in the library has really read it, it's just not possible to do so. If it has glowing reviews it will be considered important, especially if like most libraries this is considered an important area for allocating resources.

Our library system actually has no age restrictions, kids of any age can check out adult books, but I think there is still a huge difference to a kid looking in the adult stacks for something and vs finding it in the youth section.

Goosefoot · 19/08/2019 14:01

Oh, apparently this is one of the most challenged books in libraries.

I also feel uncomfortable complaining, mainly because I haven't read it myself. And I do believe in kids having a lot of freedom to read. But man, I teach and this isn't a book I'd be pushing their way, it just doesn't seem very good or thoughtful.

I think what bothers me most is the way that books that toe a certain line are just marked as important to spend library budgets on, with no real critical thought. It goes right in there with drag queen story time, it's just a sign of a general lack of reflection in society, accepting anything that has the right marketing spin put on it.

Birdsfoottrefoil · 19/08/2019 14:13

Chattylion books by detransitioners would be good

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 19/08/2019 16:09

What matters more, your belief about this books subject matter or what other people think of you for holding a belief?

I phrased that badly - I don't mind being thought that, but would want the library service to take me seriously, not just dismiss me as that...

Lamahaha · 19/08/2019 18:42

Again, if these books don’t exist, someone should write them!

Chattylion books by detransitioners would be good

Yes, yes, and yes. Please!
The Goodreads one star reviews don't help much. They are mostly by trans people saying that the book is innacurate and doesn't do the community justice.

Lamahaha · 19/08/2019 18:52

OK I take that back. The book about/by detransitioners does exist altready, and it's edited by Walt Heyer. Has this been posted here on MN already? Hopefully! THESE are the books we should be promoting. This one has the stories of detransitioned folk.

Fraggling · 19/08/2019 18:55

Any book where a boy girl man or woman defies the prevailing gender expectations of their era is gender critical.

(until of course they get retrospectively transed).

Lamahaha · 19/08/2019 19:23

Indeed, but we need books specifically exploring the whole transgender issue. We need them desperately.
But publishers won't touch such books. Heyer's book is self-published. That means it won't get the publicity necessary to break into the mainstream. The only way it can get noticed is by good sales.

The link I posted is for amazon.com; it's available as ebook. Usually, ebooks on the .com site are also available in the UK (by changing .com to .co.uk) but this one isn't. It's only avialable as print book in the uk and has no reviews.
Someone with a European or UK address can't by Kindle books from the US usually, but this one CAN be bought. In fact, I just bought it!

CaveMum · 19/08/2019 19:52

Oh this thread has taken off a bit - good! Great idea about contacting local libraries, I have membership of the central library in a super-woke University town so will go off and check out what they have now.

OP posts:
MrsSnippyPants · 27/08/2019 12:30

Response from my library;

^I have been forwarded your recent comment regarding “Beyond Magenta” by Susan Kuklin and whether it is catalogued in the correct area.
Thank you for bringing this to our attention, we will review the title in question and amend on the catalogue if appropriate. Your comment has also been passed to other colleagues within the Libraries West consortium whose authorities hold copies of this title.

Thank you again for taking the time to get in touch.^

I have asked them to let me know what the decision is.

MrsSnippyPants · 29/08/2019 11:23

Further update:

^Thank you again for getting in touch.
Just to let you know that xxxxx’s copy of this title has now been moved to Adult Non-Fiction.
Thanks^

Result of sorts, but no info on the rest of the copies in the region.
